Army Regiments
I got interested in the military pretty much the same way as Eagle, I read some books about the SAS, so I figured that I might as well try for the paras. Then I read some books on the history of the SBS and from ex-SB guys and got hooked on them, so I then decided that I should join the RMC so that I would be able to try out for both. Anyway, that was about a year ago , now i'm just in a frenzy trying to get as fit as I can and do abit of study for my exams. I find, unlike a year ago, i'm now focusing on what's directly ahead of me, which is my medical and PRMC. I'm not giving a thought to basic training, let alone joining the SBS or SAS at the moment!
Maybe, if I choose to try for SAS and get in in a few years time we might bump into eachother, if you come across a small irish guy mention this board to him

To me they all look the same - so it would depend on where you are from location wise as they all recruit in county areas...
If you want to be involved in what is happening it has to be the Para's on the Army front (2 Para) or the Royal Marines.

ok, Since you say the regiments are all the same, if I did join the Army would you say the Para's are the best for me because they have the most stuff? such as Infantry and Parachuting.
My friend told me, if you join the Royal Marines you have a chance of getting stuck on a ship for months at a time. This true?

No the Para's have good PR and get more involved with real world situations the remaining infantry regiments get stuck with exercises and ceremonial duties... so if you are stuck on Infantry Soldier the Para's are the more professional.
All Royal Marines are Commandos and they deploy by various means one (main) is by Ship. for instance the Marines were selected to go to Afghanistan because theywere capable of sustaining and supporting their own operations based from the sea. So yes you will go onboard ships and for longish periods.
You also get to serve as part of a ships detachement for upto 2 years, you have seen all the footage about guy's chasing fast boats carrying drugs and refugees in sunny climates well thse are the Royal Marines they are also the parties who abseil on to ships who will not stop for boarding.
The Para's serve in england and Germany and exercise in similar areas. The Marines get around the world more often and yes mostly on ships but not exclusively.

Hi hope im welcome? im a marine in training.
I dont really have much to say but the talk about choosing a regiment or an armed force because you want to join the SBS or SAS is confusing me!
let me explain.
I think that some of us here have not grabbed the concept of marine or para training even an infantry regiments training! The ultimate goal of people should be
1. Get selected!- NOT easy
2. Train and prepare
3. Start your official training
GET your coverted green beret or wings!
Training is no where near easy even the easy tasks of cleaning equipment causes people to drop out.
I believe that some of us should not be thinking about SBS or SAS training until we know this is the kind of life you want to lead.
I believe that the roles of the SAS or SBS have been rather taken out of proportion. It is not a james bond or tom clancy world out there you are going to be at the frontline of the worlds forces you are going to be the first in and sometimes never come out.
SORRY to put a damperon the conversations in here but im sure some if not most will agree with me!
Im not a hundred percent sure of what is expected in these elites and i dont think anyone can prepare themselves for some of the hardship that these men get put through.
Anyway sorry for wasting space but this was a comment i needed to put thanks again dave.
