Of course beasting should continue in the army, especially in the paras. Its because of our hard physical training that we are toughened, both mentally and physically.
Doc mentioned mental barriers. This is true to an extent, it is seeing which recruits will break when being induced to pain...and thats all it is, pain. There is no physical strenth required in beastings (or the type that i experienced in depot anyway) its purely mental.
It is the mental strength that makes a paratrooper. Anyone can get fit....look at Paula Radcliffe she is probably the best runner in the UK, yet at Athens Olympics she jacked and couldn't push herself when the time came to put some effort in. Now im not saying any paratrooper can run a marathon in record time but when it comes to pushing ourselves, coupled with aggression, we can push ourselves to the max if required because its what we are trained to do.
Ronnie, you mentioned about the depot screws having their hands tied. They do, but when the platoon commanders back is turned they do whatever they want to us...and that happened on many occasions. When the PC is away, Joe gets to play! I think the media should back off on this, its what the army has done for years and it produces excellent soldiers. Why on earth civilians should be involved i dont know...its none of their business.

When it was Depot Para in the 'Shot the Pl Comds took part in the beastings! I don't doubt that the Joes still get beasted, however I have quite a few friends that are/have been Depot staff and they have told me that they have to watch thier step nowadays, which is quite different to how it used to be.
As someone mentioned earlier, a group beasting can often forge positive values such as teamwork etc. It also has a way of getting a message across in as much as "you don't want to do that again, or forget that again, or there'll be more where that came from!" Every time we did something wrong, we'd get beasted for it, and we never made the same mistake again!
Society has gone soft anyway. There should be beastings in schools. That would sort the little gits out.
