A question to all the members - will someone please explain the what a nod is and a bootneck? Where did these names come from? I understand a bootneck to be a Royal Marine who has passed the Commando Course. No idea of nod though.

Nods are recruits. They used to wear a Cap Comforter at all times (the things the first Commandos used to wear in WW2) which would on occasions undo on the blokes head and "Nod" about hence Nods.

Bootneck comes from the time when Royal was on every ship in the Royal Navy. They used to put a strip of leather around their necks to make the uniform look good and also to stop them slouching. Hence Bootnecks. The USMC did the same and are called Leathernecks.

3 months on from starting this thread, I have a job offer with the NZ Army and will hopefully be there in October 06.

Almost went to NZ instead of Canada, but the economy was way better in Canada at the time.

I have a mate in Waiouru who I keep in touch with. He's an infantry LCol. Me, him, and a lad from Alabama (now LCol USMC at Quantico) all kept each other sane during our senior staff course in Kingston (near Ottawa, Canada) in '04. He's an outstanding, down-to-earth sort, as is the Marine. I witnessed him on more than one occasion trying to backbrief the Bde Comd on the cunning plan, with a very sore head and zero depth perception! He did very well, though and was recommended to return as DS.

One of our Sgts managed to get a "buddy" flight to NZ through his brother who worked for Air Canada a while back. He went to Hawaii for a week, then Fiji for a week, then to NZ for two weeks. All for a $75 dollar ticket (about 30 pounds). Lucky bugger!

If you want to deploy overseas, you'll need to join either the SAS, medical corps, or engineers, they have been taking the Lions share of deployments for many years now, with the exception of INF and Tankies going to Bosnia and Timor.

One of our Members down here went to Kiwi SAS after SB. Several adventure holidays in Viet Nam. Speaks very highly he does. I agree with your comments elsewhere and sympathise with all professional Servicemen in NZ from whatever branch.

I havent read Mike C's book, did see him on TV once and wasnt impressed, though that means nothing.
Our Squadron guys keep busy, unfortunatly not to the level of the Elmers or Aussies, but if thats the price to not be an Elmer or an Aussie its worth paying
