Interesting stuff. It amazes me that these guys plead innocent when they're caught bang-to-rights.

I've been sitting in the back row on this debate about crime and punishment I'm one of the Dinosaur's of the old Prison service,Im sure that 'Goldie' has heard of the 'Nick em,stick em,and bang em up brigade' I never gave much time to Cons ex or otherwise,being one of the old school I was considered to be fair,I have had dealings with some of the nastiest individuals on this Earth, I did belong to the days of No Radios,no jewelry,closed visits and bread and water, I have seen the system change for better or for worse?,Oh I've been taken to task over my attitude towards criminals the old saying still go's 'if you cant stand the heat keep out of the I'M A SCAMMER SPAMMER!!!',and during the course of my training has a Prison Officer we were taught the hanging proceedure (now frowned upon) yep I could do the 'Death Watch' in regards to Huntley and a few others I could think of,bring back the ultimate penalty and back date It.Now if thats upset a few people 'Hard Cheese'.Aye JR

Who runs your Prison Service?
here it depends on the level of the crime.
For instance,
DUI,County Jail,run by the local Sheriff.
State Offense's include,Grand Theft Auto,
bank robbery etc.State Pen.for those.
Murder,again dealt with by the states where the crime was commited.
Increasingly most murderers are put on Death row
Capital Murder,has now become a Federal offense,it means you have to
kill more than two people in one year and then get caught to be charged.
Federal Pen.and endless appeals then follow,which means you will
live out your natural with out fear of execution.

Wholley, I think our prisons are in categories (High security, medium security and bugger all security). Jails are in police stations and are only for holding prisoners when the are caught for a short time before being sent off to big boy's prison to await trial. That is my laymans understanding of it but one of the screws (term of endearment for a prison officer) will put you right.
PS, why screw? Thumbscrews, turning the screw? Any ideas?

The term 'Screw',Many many moons ago when the term Hard Labour meant just that a felon would be expected to work at a cylinder drum turning the spindle handle so many turns which would register on a counter after so many turns the 'Turn key'(warder) would screw down on a bolt which in turn made the turning of the handle harder to work the Felon would be expected to turn the handle up to 1.000 times during the course of the days punishment, so to screw down hard made the work harder, Hence the word screw!.Aye jr

Now a bit of light entertainment,As a new Prison Officer I was given the Task of supervising a working Party of 14 old lags,at the end of the days work a body search would be carried out by the party officer for concealed items?.Me, okay you lot line up against the wall,Bloody hell said one old lag He's going to shoot us!.

most of the uk prisons are goverment run i.e HM PRISON SERVICE, however we also have several private ran establishments going as well, most inmates prefer the state run one's as it's a tadge more organised and they know what to expect.
we have several max security prisons or dispersal prisons depending on how you like to describe them, these are obviously for the most dangerous inmates within the system or for inmates who have just been done for murder etc and been given life, if you look at the well known inmates i.e sutcliffe, hindley etc people think that these are the worst about but bare in mind that the hospital style prisons will only take in the inmates that they think can be cured all the other in-cureable one's will come into my type of establishment so you can imagine what i have to deal with day to day.
we then go to the lower cat prisons i.e, cat B, cat C cat D, the mad thing is that the staff who work in the cat D establishments where they look after the Jeffery Archer's of the world get the same pay as myself who deals with some very sick puppies !!!

we do 12 mths probation in the prison you've joined which could be any security cat, and then move onto wherever you want within england and wales, scotland has its own prison service
