goldie - That makes I larf :D

Smiler.wales - I wasn't saying that you wouldn't go. I was saying how it is the guys who don't want to go who end up there. My battalion has done firefighting, peacekeeping, handing out aid, controlling floods, helping people in icestorms. I don't about you but I didn't join the army to do that.

Bob Bell,

I happen to know Mercury from Hull and he's a damned professional TA soldier with a family with a long history in the RAF as a regular. He was just trying to bring a bit of humour into the thread, I'm sure!

Hmmmmm seems that my comments have been misinterpreted what I was looking to do was start a discussion about being called up however it seems to have evolved into "TA are moany buggers who arent real soldiers"

believe it or not this is something Ive tried to avoid (its why Im there every weekend Im required) as I think the TA do work hard and a justifiable job. I wasnt moaning about going (tho I freely admit the increased likelyhood of going does give you a wake up call) my initial post was to discuss the possibility of going and how that would reflect on

a) The way I tell the fiancee

b) How it will affect me job

As hard as it would be if the missus severely objected to me going then I would still go as I was part of the TA when she met me and I will continue to do so until the time comes when I no longer enjoy it. I would do this despite knowing the heartache and anguish this would cause her.

The job aspect is a little more complex as I would need to confirm that my company would accept me back on my return - To be honest with my current company they are pretty pro military however my last job viewed the TA as nothing more as a hobby and my manager said I quote "Why should this company be penalised for your hobby"

Personally I think it would be an interesting and difficult experience and would enjoy it but all this is supposition as Ive said before Im just going to enjoy xmas and handle 2004 as and when it arrives

The trouble with being in the TA this sort of can happen, it is up to you to consider before joining all the things that you mentioned. Will it affect my career, well yes it might, if you are going to be absent for long periods of time is your firm going to wonder if you are fully committed to your Job.
Also if promotion comes along would you be considered as you could well be sent of on another foreign holiday as far as they are concerned and would leave them in hole so it well could go to a person that they know will be there. As far as your girl friend goes, much the same thing applies, do you think more of her than of playing soldier. The choices are yours and yours alone, you have to make them and then stick with them. If you want to be a soldier then join the regulars if not stick at being a civy

Just for the record the brown envelopes landed down here. 16 people were lucky enough to go on a holiday with sand and sun.
Most of them were our NCO's all but one have been called up. Also, i think we're sending out dads army with most of them being in there mid 30's.
One poor bloke has had to move his marrage forward a few months.
