Hi and welcome,
Although you do mention SF I am still moving this thread to the general section as I feel it is better suited there.
Have a read of this http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_sign and scroll down to the British Army section. It gives a half decent over view.
Also be advised that www.writingforums.org/ may be better placed to assist you.
