Paras to SAS
Hi everyone, I was planning on Joining the Royal Marines then SAS but after researching and thinking I would say that the Paras have more have a chance than the Marines of getting into the SAS because of the obvious parachute training. I know that getting into the SAS is extremely difficult but that is what I am aiming to achieve.
I have a few questions about the Paras as I am new to researching them because I was planning on joining the Marines, so:
1. People who are in the Marines say "We are better than Paras" or people who are in Paras say "We are better than Marines" without being biased what is the honest answer? I would say they are both mentally and physically strong as each other and both elite at their own thing, (Marines - amphibious and Paras - Air).
2. What is the minimum years of being in the Paras before being allowed to attempt selection at SAS? And how would you go about asking for selection?
3. Could you link me to some articles on Paras so I can learn more about them (Training, history, weapons, equipment.etc).
Thanks.
-Lloyd

1. They really can't be compared to be honest, like you said, Paras are Air, Marines are Amphibious - two completely different forces - it's just rivalry.LloydL001 wrote:Hi everyone, I was planning on Joining the Royal Marines then SAS but after researching and thinking I would say that the Paras have more have a chance than the Marines of getting into the SAS because of the obvious parachute training. 2. I do believe you have to have served 3 years before applying for SAS selection, that's what tends to be said in books/programmes.
3. Anything really, just Google parachute regiment. Elite UK forces website is good for it as well as YouTube as there are a few documentaries out on the Paras and P Company.
Re: Paras to SAS
Thanks. I didn't think it would be 3 years for selection for SAS, Marines are only 18/24 months.

What's your source?LloydL001 wrote:Thanks. I didn't think it would be 3 years for selection for SAS, Marines are only 18/24 months.
It may be less, I don't think there is a limit as such, but more so to get you the experience and to prepare for it.
Re: Paras to SAS
When I wanted to join the Marines I ordered a recruitment DVD off the website, its on youtube - watch it here: Skip to 01:54 and watch until 02:14.

Re: Paras to SAS
Go into the Para's then go for one Para which is now Special Forces Support Group and you will get a good idea what it is all about. Also about 70% of the SAS are all ex Para the same as most of the SBS are ex RM.
Re: Paras to SAS
It says on The Para website that you have to be in 2 or 3 para for 2/3 years then you have to be selected for 1 para.Tab wrote:Go into the Para's then go for one Para which is now Special Forces Support Group and you will get a good idea what it is all about. It really doesn't matter. All I can say is try your best and be the best soldier you can be and you'll be fineLloydL001 wrote:It says on The Para website that you have to be in 2 or 3 para for 2/3 years then you have to be selected for 1 para.Tab wrote:Go into the Para's then go for one Para which is now Special Forces Support Group and you will get a good idea what it is all about. Re: Paras to SAS
I have known soldiers go straight into one para from training. Normally they like to have soldiers that have done a tour of duty some where so that they know what it is all about.
Re: Paras to SAS
So it is possible to go into Para 1 after training but you have to be extremely good during training?Tab wrote:I have known soldiers go straight into one para from training. Normally they like to have soldiers that have done a tour of duty some where so that they know what it is all about.

Seriously stop worrying though, it's good that you want to be prepared for it but at the end of the day just try your best - I'm looking to follow the same route, except I want to spend time with the PFs before I go for SAS.

Re: Paras to SAS
It could be that the other two Battalions are out of the country playing in the sandpit, and 1 Para might need a couple bodies to fill a hole in a unit, then there would be a chance of them taking from a those who have just finished training.
Re: Paras to SAS
Would you have to be in 1 Para to have selection with the SAS anyway?
