Is 21 too old to join the army?

Post by souman »

I know that 21 is not old at all, but would I be too late? I am 17 now, but planning to go to Uni which means that by the time I finish my degree I'll hit 21.. My question is not based upon eligibility requirements i.e. I know that i can join the army even if i'm 30. The thing is that at the time of my basic training all other lads will be much more younger than me. Plus, after that i gonna have to take orders from younger people... What is the trend? Are there many poeple joining at that age or the majority are 16,17,18?

Oh, and I don't have british passport yet. But at the time i finish my degree I will have. I've red somewhere at these forumes that dual nationality can prevent you from some jobs. I want to join the infrantry and more specifically royal regiment of Fusiliers. Would the fact that I possess dual nationality (Bulgarian/british) prevent me from joining?

10x a lot :)

At 21 you will be in your prime, and there British Army has many overseas nationals in it. What do you hope to join when you go into the forces.

I want to join the Royal regiment of Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion (Light role infantry). I dont know whether I have answer you question because I havent done fully my research and I need to upgrade my knowledge about UK army. I know that Battalion is big unit that is broken down into some other sub-divisions and probably you meant which one of these I am hoping to get into. I dont know :) I just want to join the forces as soon as possible but my status doesnt allom me. So, I need to wait. Im just hoping that you guys will help me out with these issues. So do you think that dual nationality wont prevent me to follow my dream?! :D And you dont think that 21 is not too late and i should do it?

Absolutely go for it - I didn't join the RAF until I was 26, and although I was one of the oldest on my course, I wouldn't say it was a disadvantage. You'll have more life experience, more of the general life skills you need, and you'll be more grown up and sensible (possibly) than some of the younger people you go through training with.

The dual nationality shouldn't be an issue for what you want to do, it's only really a bar to some of the more Intelligence-based jobs. While you're doing your degree, think about the kind of clubs and societies you can join at your university which will make your application better. They usually want to see a good variety of hobbies etc. including sports obviously, and some kind of charity or volunteer work is always well received!
You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

my boyfriend applied for the army when he was 20 and after alot of messing around (long story) he finally has his training date!! and he is 22 about to turn 23, so im sure 21 will be fine, there will be alot of younger lads but that doesnt mean you carnt be mates and get on.

No. Check out the age limits and you will discover 21 is well within the criteria. If anything you will have the advantage over the usual 'straight from school' (normaly a doofus) in that you will be hopefully more fitter, stronger and mentally robust . Mentally robust meaning more mature and not wanting to quit training because nasty cpl's picked you up for being a bone idle useless tw*t.

Hello,
Just to say I joined at 21 (many years ago!!), I would say that the perfect age.
Make sure your very fit when joining, it makes it easier through basic training, most of the punishments will be excercise, it really helps!! Have a good all round strength, speed, endurance fitness. Be ready for anything and enjoy it!!

All the best.
