I've been reading a great deal about the Army recently. I think the civilian life may not be for me. I have a 4 year degree, and currently I am a stock broker (job is great, make good money, just bored). I am 21 years old and I was considering doing OCS. I've gathered alot of information on OCS and the process for BCT and the transtion to OCS and then BOLC, but here's where I am confused.
Let me give you some background, especially for any recruiters out there who want to help me in answering my questions. I'm not prepared to stop by the local recruiter's office yet because I don't want to be hounded. Hopefully not all recruiters are like the ones when I was in school. No offense, they really hounded me in highschool because of my ASVAB score (they told me it was a career test).
I am in good physical shape, expecting that to be "incredible physical shape" by the time I decide to get serious about the whole deal. I have NO problems health wise, and NO problems law wise. In highschool i snagged a 95 on the ASVAB, it's past the two year mark so I'd have to retake it anyways. Overall I'd say I'm a pertty normal person who is in good shape and has his wits about him. I want to get an 09S contract, as I understand it, and go to BCT and then drill till OCS.
Taking a quick break from the main question here to interject; i've heard that OCs board denies people based on "not a good fit for army, will get left behind in class". Is this true?
Continuing on,I pass OCS, lets say I do well. Let's say I've got the heart and the drive and I pass with flying colors. I get to branch anywhere I want.. Keeping that in mind I think branching MI would be a good idea for moving up in the world, getting clearance and having a job analyzing. I'm open to other mos's IF IT GETS ME TO WHAT IM ABOUT TO DESCRIBE. What I'd really like is to go to jump school then bounce over to ranger school and get the patch. Whether or not i get to be a ranger, thats fine by me I suppose. My end goal is the SFAS and the Q course. I want it more than anything and I'm working everyday to become as prepared as possible physically for it. However, after reading through a few posts here I've come to find that officers don't really have too many shots at SFAS and 75th Rangers as a DA option within the platoon. My question is, how much of this is true and what can I do to achieve my goal? What kind of path, or what kind of things will I need to bring up with my recruiter to make sure he and I are on the same page?
To recap, I sort of understand BCT and OCS; what I really want is Ranger and to achieve a spot within SF. Are these things doable? I know everyone wants to be in special forces, but please try to humor me and help me clear up some of the confusion in my questions!
