its more than likely shins mate, ive had them and they completely ruined my training programme for months, so do everything you can to prevent them, i went to a physio and she taught me a well good technique for soothing the battered tendon assosiated with shins, get both your thumbs and put them at the top of your shin in line where its been hurting and firmly slide them down putting loads of pressure into the shin, repeat about 30 times, do this every day about 3 times and after every run,
it worked a treat for me after about 1-2 weeks my shins felt way better, when you first do them it really hurts but it means your working on the right spot.
also do loads of calf strengthening excersises to help build up your lower legs.
theres loads of other info on the net so look it up and do your research on how to prevent it.
good luck mate!

Just to add to what parapreps said.
- Makes sure you have the correct running shoes for your feet.
- Make sure your warming up and stretching properly.
- Stretch your calfs, hamstrings and quads two or three times a day.
This was the advice i recieved from an osteopath and a podiatrist, its got me back out running after 2 months of frustration!!

Oh shin splints are horrible, I had them really bad when stated running longer distances, I couldnt even put socks on without them hurting!
I think you've got all the advice you need dont give up they do get better,
Always have a good stretch, before and after runnning,
and i found skipping helps
... seriously it does! gets the old legs used to the shock.

It is odd that we were in the forces we never did stretching exercises, we never heard of shin splints, or torn tendons, we just piled on the kit and went out and did it. I often wonder what has made things so different between the generations. Is it because when we kids we were all ways out side playing games until it was to dark to see. There was no TV or computer games and if you were in doors you were expected to sit down and read a book. You always walked to school as there was no other kind transport and then at school it was football in the playground with a tennis ball then cricket with the same tennis ball all summer There was never any fat children as rationing had seen to that.

It's generally accepted that the reason why people get shin splints etc... these days is because of the shoes people wear.tab wrote: I often wonder what has made things so different between the generations.
There is a lot more support and cushioning in modern shoes and since they're all most people have ever worn peoples feet just aren't used to the strenuous activity like they used to when shoes didn't have a lot of give in them.
