RAF Regiment PGAC advice

Post by BucksBoy »

Hi folks just completed my PGAC at RAF Honnington a few weeks ago and for those that have theirs coming up it is worth making the point that the PGAC is now definately a selection course rather than an acclimatisation orientated visit for potential gunners as recruitment for the RAF Regiment is over subscribed and has a backlog of recruits waiting to start their TG course at the moment (including me now :x). As they can now be more selective this means that the standards you have to achieve on the course are much higher than the minimum ones given on the website and the letter you get sent if you want to start on the next intake:

* Although the multi-stage bleep test pass is a level 9, you really need to be getting at least level 10-11 (you can download this to an Ipod/MP3 player and it is worth practicing before you go)

* You need to aim to be doing at least 30-40 press ups and sit ups in a minute

While I was there the Corporal in charge of us mentioned that the following changes are shortly being brought in:
* The time allowed on the three mile run is being reduced from 24 to 22 minutes, in line with the run Potential Marine and Para recruits have to do
* The low ropes exercise is being replaced by a 'P Company' style team stretcher race/log run, done in boots and with helmets

Out of forty lads who started on the Monday night, only twenty two of us passed on the Thursday, and five of those got a 'B' which meant that they will have to wait to start on the intake after the next one so if you want to start your TG course sometime in the next century it is worth making sure your fitness is up to scratch before you get there.

Most of the lads who failed were binned because they were hopelessly unfit - one bloke could only do 7 press ups in a minute, another dropped out of the run after about a mile. Not only do you get a chewing out from the PTI's and the PGAC Staff for wasting their time but the gen on you quickly gets about if you have done a miserable job in the tests and you have Trainee Gunner recruits and Reg NCO's coming up and taking the piss out of you in front of everyone. Also a couple of other lads were gobby to the PGAC staff and PTI's and got failed on their attitude.

As long as you have a good base level of fitness and dont give the PGAC staff or the PTI's any shit you will be fine, they allow you plenty of sleep each night and you get fed well. Other than the first night you also get loads of free time in the evenings (there is a TV and Common room in the PGAC blocks you can use, although you have to tidy it) and they take you down the bar where you can get soft drinks and snacks (although you are not allowed alcohol on PGAC even if you are over eighteen). You also get loads of opportunity to talk to both TG Recruits and serving Reg Gunners and NCO's when you are in the training centre at Honnington, which is worth taking advantage of.

Some last bits of advice:
- If you arrrive at Bury station early there is a pub just over the road
- Dont take too much stuff as you only have one foot locker to keep it in - MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THIS LOCKED WITH THE KEY ON YOU
- Take spare smart trousers and a shirt in addition to the one you have to turn up in
- Keep your hands out of your pockets and dont chew gum or you will get bollocked, not just by the PGAC staff but also by NCO's and Officers who are about
- DRINK PLENTY OF WATER BUT ALSO MAKE SURE YOUR WATER BOTTLE IS KEPT FULL TO THE BRIM ALL THE TIME :wink:

Anyway hope this is of help. :P

lol water bottle, 'away , away, ...over your head, away.....

In my opinion its long overdue this new 'tougher' approach to the PGAC. when I done mine I was very suprised by the relaxed approach by some of the staff running it. the pti's seemed too chilled out aswell, apart from the ones that take you for pre-para. By the sounds of it now because of the abundance of potential recruits the course can crank it up a gear rather than take the softly softly because guys cant keep up or want to get away. in other words the mongs got a hell of a lot further than they should of.

Still waiting for my start date from Cranwell, there is an intake in late March/early April but that is already full unless there are last minute drop outs, other than that looking at August/September, which does my head in as I hate my job and also need to keep my phys up for the next six months ......... :x

Yeah, the Corporal in charge on our PGAC reckoned that the Reg had already filled most of its recruitment quota for the rest of the year. Like I say, still have'nt had my paperwork from Cranwell yet so in the dark about when I start.

Chin up, I know of lads starting in June and within the past few weeks folk have been getting July as well so you stand a fair chance of getting in some time this year! haha. Besides, My PGAC isn't til the end of this month and I'm clinging to the hope of getting July! I'm struggling to find an interim job and dossing around my parents house at age 21 is gash!

Thanks for the info on PGAC, all very useful. Makes me glad I've been preparing properly and aiming high with the training. Can't believe you had mongs turning up who couldn't even get near the required standard though!

Aside from the 'known' assessments (swim, 3 miler, bleep test, sit ups and press ups) what else do you do for 3 days? Is there a lot of physical stuff on top of the tests?
AST - PASSED
Interview - 13/01/09 - PASSED
Medical - 20/01/09 - PASSED
PGAC - 13/04/09 - CANCELLED
PGAC - 27/04/09 - FAIL DUE TO INJURY
PGAC Re-Attempt - 14/09/09 - ?
TG Course - ???

No mate, you will only have phys for the tests that you are informed of in advance -

* Bleep test
* Max press ups and situps in one minute
* Swim test - the pool at Honnington was shut for repairs so we didnt do ours, but it may be fixed by now so best be prepared for it
* Three mile run
* Low ropes exercise involves some phys, although this is changing
* Assault course

Other than the physical assessments, there are also a series of presentations on subjects including the TG course, career opportunities, current deployments and life as a Gunner, and pay and conditions. You will also visit the recruit blocks to see where you will be living. Ask as many questions to the staff as you like, they dont mind as long as they are not stupid ones like 'how many people have you killed?' :lol:

On the Thursday you will have a final interview with the PGAC staff where they let you know how you have done and your grade, after which we visited the injuries rehabilitation unit - this is apparantly one of the best in the armed forces - had our height/weight etc. taken, and got sized up for our kit - you will get boots issued which you are expected to break in before you come back for the TG course. Good luck with your PGAC mate, hopefully I will see you in July!

Hey,

Got my PGAC dates through today finally...the 4th May...my inital reaction was "shit, thats 3 weeks away!" and recently I lost motivation for my training because I was told I could be on my PGAC within weeks after my medical...and that was about 2 months ago.

So yea, off I go, can't wait for it but still apprehensive at the same time. From what I've read I think I'm ready but only one way to find out and thats go to Honington and give it my heart and soul!

Cheers for the info mate, been a massive help.

Anyone else down for the 4th May by any chance??

the assualt course at honnington in my opinion reminded me of the apparatus more suited to a school playground. the only reason it worked was because the staff beasted you silly doing leopard crawls etc beforehand. A far cry from the 'proper' steeple chase and assualt course Id experienced in catterick.
