It can't be cos of that surely-I read that someone was posthumously awarded the VC for jumping on a live grenade in the trenches of WW1 and saved his pals by shielding the blast with his body."In the face of the enemy" is nonsense really as they're doesn't exist any front line anymore so to speak.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour'

Ok I admit Wikipedia isn't the most accurate but I can't be bothered to search for something more reliable. He was not under fire at the time so cannot be awarded the VC, however the GC is also a very high award and he definetly deserves it.
The GC had not been created in WWI, maybe that is why that partciluar soldier recieved the VC then.
