Heaves

Post by Scotty123 »

Hey guys.
I'm in the process of applying for the Paras, got my interview tomorrow, and was just wondering what the best way to increase the amount of heaves/chin-ups I can do because I can only do 6 good ones at the moment and I don't think that is enough.
Any advice or ideas would be great, thanks in advance. :D

Try negative-heaves..

You jump into the bar on the up-position and lower yourself slowly...

This is in overarm position... always best to do overarm heaves as they are harder.

Apparently especially good if you're stuck on a number....

Maybe you could ask at your local gym for more specific instruction on technique as I can't remember it just now... (McEwans Export and the Scotland game have seen to that!!)

I remember though a PTI when I was training for the Paras saying "running and press-ups,.. that's all you need for the Paras.."

We didn't do many heaves in PT on drillnights (I was training for 4 para, TA,. when I say PT on drill nights what I mean is.. every drill night was PT night!! At least half the evening..)

Buy yourself a chin up bar stick it in the doorway of your room and do your max every time you go in or out of your room. It worked wonders for me. They're only about a fiver. 8)

Please take more care with your spelling and capitalisation in future.

They're not big on chin-ups, but practice in the morning and night. You will get there in the end mate.

Just wondering are there any especially good chin up bars anyone would reccomend?
I'm looking for the ones that don't leave a mark in your doorway, so not anything that requires holes or anything.

This website has way too many postings like this when the answer is quite simple, find a pull up bar or someting you can do heaves on and beast yourself!! This also goes for running or pushups, just do it.
I understand laziness as much as the next man but this is the only way to improve. However if you can do 6 heaves you should be fine for adsc as long as your run time is good.

Thats too simple mate..

Kids these days want energy drinks, special foods, eqt, heart rate monitors etc.. When all thats required is to get your arrrse in gear and work like hell...

I think we have a blame culture in britain these days,. If someone fails at something its not their fault, its my shoes, the pull up bar wasnt the right diameter, my shorts chafe, I have blisters because my socks dont fit, I've got sore shins is it shin splints or a broken leg? etc..etc..

The suggestion about local park monkey bars is ideal, heaves can then be incorporated into a daily run.. easy.

My previous post on this subject (before anyone says look at previous post etc..) was for someone starting out not being able to do a pull up in the first place... therefore the message about stop fann**ng around and get on with it is still applicable!!

Alex, it isnt just a blame culture nowadays although you are right to some extent.

If you could go back to the 60's and ask someone what shinsplints were they'd look at you like you were johnny foreigner. Medical science has advanced in the last 40 years from the point that back then if your shins hurt, you were being a pansy to nowadays there being a reason WHY they hurt.

Sometimes there are reasons of safety as to why someone needs to stop. Dont just dismiss it straight off the bat as being a pansy.

Nowhere did I mention the people being pansies..

I'm saying people blame they're own failings far more readily on things that can be cured or fixed but would rather play the victim..

I know society has moved on and practically everyone has central heating, nobody uses a cobbler anymore you just buy a new pair of shoes., as a nation we are generally less robust than the equivalant generations of 20-30 years ago..

If I was to say to my kids we are walking to the shops there would be an outcry from them, therefore its easier just to leave them to their own devices and go ourselves.. (they're old enough to be left in the house by themselves before anyone calls for social services!!)...

I can see your point re shinsplints and how you may percieve what I said to be calling everyone a pansy, my point is more centred on the fact that people give up easier and maybe tend to play on it a bit more, because society has changed.

To give a non military example..

Up here a couple of years ago, a local council tried to change the rules of school football so that at half time the score went back to nil-nil.. This was so there would be no losers at half time and if the team losing in the second half went more than a goal down, they could bring on another player. I mean FFS!!!

Kids need to learn how to win and lose, how to take losing as part and parcel and yet be a gracious winner.. Yet these so called do-gooders want to treat everyone as though wrapped in cotton wool because we can't have a school football team losing a game, god-forbid I mean its only part of the game. A winner, aloser or maybe a draw (as long as its earnt!!)..

Do you see what I'm trying to say?

How can we expect kids growing up these days to cope with the rigours of military life, or even their own preparations for it, if all their lives they're being molly coddled like that? If they are going to accept that the score goes back to nil-nil at half time, why should the rest of their lives be any dofferent?

I absolutely agree with you in that respect fella, It just seemed as though you were blaming the understanding of more medical problems as just being pansys.

I'll completely agree my generation is weaker than previous generations. If I tell someone my age that I did a 30 mile ride to day the usual responses are along the lines of "fcuk that" & "how the hell, that must be knackering" whereas the older lads generally give the "ah, I use to walk that far to school" which I love hearing hehe.

That whole changing the football rules, what a load of crock. I'd stamp on that councillor. There are winners and losers in life, deal with it. Honestly.

Not really any advice for pullups or any other stuff like that mate just, pullup lol. I got a pullup bar about 3 months ago & i can do between 15 & 20 pullups now. Just buy one that screws in your door pannel, if it makes 2 holes it makes 2 holes im sure 2 holes in your door isn't as important as your career mate. Try the 100 pressups technique with pullups, never tried it myself i just do max every night before bed but it may work.

6 Pullups
30 Sec Rest
4 Pullups
30 Sec Rest
4 Pullups
30 Sec Rest
3 Pullups
30 Sec Rest
Max Pullups

Or if its to hard have 60 seconds rest then as you get better up the quantity. Good Luck.
