Want to Join the Marines!

Post by Bondy »

Hey Folks,

Just registered here, looks like a great forum for people interested in a military career. I'm interested in Joining the Royal Marines as a commando. I'm 17 years old and I've recently left college as It wasn't really my thing.

At the moment I'm pretty much following the get fit to apply program off the marines website, mainly concerntraing on loosing a little weight and building up my CV fitness. I'm 14.5 stone at the moment which is a little high so I'm going to spend 6 months at the gym, 5 days a week doing treadmills, swimming, cycling and circuit excersises to drop off some weight and built my fitness.

Anything else I should consider doing? I just want to prepare myself properly for the pre-selection tests.

Thanks!

Get outside. Running, cycling, whatever you like, but CV in a gym ain't as good as the real thing, plus you get used to being piss wet through and icers. You will never do gym work in that sense in training, so why bother now?

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I was thinking of doing a run in the morning around 10am then in the evenings go to the gym and go through all the circuits.

Also, what would you recommend for me to measure the amount of distance I've done? I've seen those nike+ ipod kits, they worth investing in?

Alright Bondy, welcome.
The website http://www.mapmyrun.com is a great tool for running outdoors. The only downside is they don't have too many of the tracks in the woods, but if you know where they run on a map you can just plot lines in through it (should make sense when you figure the website out).
On the nike+ front - have a search of the forums, you'll be surprised how many questions you can answer yourself that way.
Good luck with your training.
