Foot injury, I need advice please.
Foot injury, I need advice please.
I've developed a foot injury called Metatarsalgia and it makes running very painful. One way I could describe the pain is if I am running bare foot on pebbles.
I went to see a physiotherapist about the pain in my foot, she noticed that the muscles in my lower leg were very tight and didn't give much movement at all. After a few weeks of physiotherapy she said that she can see a big improvement and that the range of movement in my foot/leg has increased.
She said that I can now start running again, So I've been out a few times and yesterday I noticed that the pain is recurring again! Although it's not as painful as it was before, I know it'll only get worse if I continue to run. I have looked for ways to treat it on the Internet and most websites say I should get special insoles for my trainers, but I don't want to buy them because it would only be a temporary solution to the problem and I presume that I wouldn't be allowed to use them during training?
If anyone could please give me some advice on what I should do, I would be very grateful! Thank you.

Insoles will help with your foot stike but also most problems like this are caused by muscle inbalnces in your lower limbs. I have an ankle problem which is apparently linked to muscles in my entire leg including the hip!
Anyway, by all means use the insoles but also work into your training some comprehensive leg exercises. Compounds moves being good but also specific moves to target individual muscles where needed. There are also foot workouts you can do, walking on heels, picking up marbles with your toes, calf raises etc etc which will help. Talk to your physio or do some research on the internet. There is some handy stuff out there.
Cross training is also good. So get on the bike/rower to keep the cardio going whilst still building the legs. And don't rush back into training too fast. These sorts of problems usually take time.
Hope that is of help.

Hi mate, never had this problem but for a tenner or so why not give them a try, insoles are generally acceptable I think... try some different things!but I don't want to buy them because it would only be a temporary solution to the problem and I presume that I wouldn't be allowed to use them during training
Depends what insoles your looking for aswell, those tenner one's like sorbothane are great for shock absorbing but dont actually change the way you run. The podiatrist will make you some orthotics but these are really pricey - my orthotics aswell as the examination were £125.Hi mate, never had this problem but for a tenner or so why not give them a try, insoles are generally acceptable I think... try some different things!

As we have said many times before you can not beat some good specialist advice, general advice will not help everyone and if you don't get it checked out then it could create long term damage. But maybe for a tenner it would be worth a quick go in some insoles to see if this helps with the problem at all

Minus that.
Get the insoles off of the tin-ter-net lads.
Unless of course you choose the other way.

Thank you for all the replies, I'll get myself a pair of those insoles as soon as I get the chance. I called the Marines office today to make 100% sure that I would be allowed to wear them during training and he said it's fine, so that's good to know.
I just hope that they can find and fix the problem tomorrow, it feels like I've been waiting forever to join now.
Well, I went to my local podiatrist yesterday and I was recommended to use sorbathane insoles
I went out running today (with the new insoles) and although I couldn't feel the pain in my metatarsal when running, I could feel it afterwards when I pressed in that area, I really do hope that the pain I felt was because it hasn't fully healed yet
Also, I felt a new pain in my ankle too, it's at the front of the ankle and just to the left (If that actually makes any sense), I also feel this same pain when I'm trying to stretch my lower calf (I think it's called the Soleus). I don't seem to have much movement in my legs.
I spoke the the podiatrist again and she said I should put some wedges under the heal of my insoles
I hope that will solve the problem.
Does anyone know what could be causing either of these pains? And if insoles and/or orthotics don't work, what else can be done? I'm starting to think that this will turn out for the worse and that I'll never be able to join the Marines
I just wish that my body was as strong as my determination.

As soon as you use the insoles or orthotics or whatever, it isn't going to fix the problem straight away. Get plenty of rest and build up slowly.
I picked up bad pains in my shins ages ago and the general advice is to take 2 weeks off running. Well so far I've been off for over 4 months now doing plenty of non impact cv. I'm waiting to see a physio and I've got to wait 2 months so there's nothing else I can really do apart from wait and keep up the fitness.
I've waited so long to join up now another few months off running while I get the problem sorted isn't going to get me down.
Keep your head up mate and good luck.
