RAF PTI info..

Post by staffsgent »

I've done the visit to the local recruiting center but I'm none the wiser - I understand most the tests: -

1.5mile run under 12 mins
push ups 60s
sit ups 60s
bmi under 30
tread water 2 mins
bleep test ..

but the swimming? In my leaflet i have 180m - if a standard pool is 25m then something doesnt fit? Is it supposed to say 150m for the swim test? I also understand that I have to display 3 strokes competently but is this one after the other? Or a rest period between laps? Any info here is appreciated as this would alter my training somewhat.

I'm thinking its going to be 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke all in one go.

cheers,

Can't be sure bout the swimming but will find out for you... (watch this space)
Best thing would be to be prepared for either - stopping in between or not
make sure you are able to change strokes easily - I take it there isn't a time limit for the test?

I think I may have the answer for you. Whilst you are correct in stating that a standard size swimming pool is 25M (50M for Olympic Standard), most pools at RAF stations are old "pre-meteric" sizes and, as such are 30m.

In any case, the levels set are the minimum and you should aim to exceed these.

many thanks for the responses guys - you were right, it 'fits' as they are pre-metric pools and the swim has to be non stop, for anyones future reference.

The specs are simple

The RI's train at headly court in London

the PI's train at Brize Norton near Oxford

and the ATI's train in South Wales

They do all their usual duties and then the extra responsibilities (specialisations)

The pool you do the swim test in is 30 metres.

First you do a 50 metre timed swim which has to be completed in 50 seconds. (they set some floats 5 metres from the end of the pool which you stop and turn around at).

Once you've done that, you do 60 metres back stroke, 60 metres breast stroke, 60 metres front crawl. this can be done with goggles and you cant stop. Then you take your goggles off and tread water for 2 minutes, then have to retrieve a brick from 3 metres underwater.

Thats the swim test done/

I don't know where you got that from, they didn't do that last year?

Where is your info from?

I took the 3 day PTI selection tests last month. I didn't get through though. No one was expecting to do the 50 metre timed swim so it must be something they've only recently added.
