PRMC Predicament

Post by lukeyluke »

Hello everyone,

I’m in a bit of a predicament about my PRMC. The situation is that I have been training hard since late August to get myself ready for my 2nd PRMC (first one was in 2003 from which I withdrew and decided that I wasn’t ready at that time). Anyway my PRMC date has come through quicker than I had expected and I have been offered one on the 4th – 7th December, which I am in two minds about, one being great I could be in sooner than expected and the other being a feeling that I’m not quite ready.

With being tall I have always struggled with the upper body exercises so press ups and pull ups have never been my stronger points. I feel I have come a long way with them over the last couple of months especially with the press ups; I’m now able to complete three sets of 50 and I’m maxing out at between 50 and 55. Pull ups on the other hand are not going so well and on a good day I can just complete 5 but on an average day 4 and some days I struggle to do 3 with good form. My sit ups are ok and have no trouble completing 75-85 in 2 minutes and my running is going well too, I manage to complete a pretty damn hilly 3 miler in 21.30 on average. After this week I have 2 weeks training remaining and in my heart I want to go all out and get it but in my head I have doubts that I’ve got enough time to get them pull ups up to grade and with it being my 2nd time I really don’t want to fail but at the same time I really want to get it done, I have my brief at the AFCO tomorrow and if I’m not sure I wanted to reschedule in time for the place to be used up on another candidate.

Cheers,

Luke

Aaaaaaaarggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!

Get down there and get it smashed, take the date. I'd bite their hand off if they wanted to send me there this afternoon.

You have just shy of 3 weeks, there is so much you can do it in that time it's unreal. For the next 3 weeks train specifically for what you're going down for.

Daily: 75% of max effort on press ups, sit ups, pulls up x 3 - 3 times per day. This will not overtrain you if you're eating like someone that trains and not living on pot noodles and cheese sandwiches!

Between now and then:

- 6 x 3 milers @ MAX effort. You will jog the first 1.5 miles of it down the PRMC as I'm sure you know so working to max capacity for twice the distance will help you piss it down there

- 4 x Circuits, Look in the Finisher thread for some ideas and finish it off with Tabata sprints. Sprint all out for 20 secs, slow walk for 10 seconds x 8 or if you're twisted I did this x 16 the other day and thought I was going to die. The increase in VO2 max even in these 4 short sessions will be worthwhile

- 4 x Gentle distance runs, 6 miles + maybe adding some fartlek work for the final mile

I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs mate but frustrates the hell out of me when people seem to be making excuses when I would cut my left bollock off to leopard crawl the 3 miler right now.

Arrange these seesions in a work/work/rest format and get down there! Best of luck mate hope it goes well

There will never be a perfect time to go... Being in the pack with other poeple will make you try harder and also the DS will push you.

Go and give it your best shot

It sounds to me like you are setting yourself up for the worst decision of your life.

When you get to training you quickly learn whether you you are ready for it or not. You have to want it with every inch of your body otherwise you'll never make it through training and you'll probably want to leave within weeks of being there.

Think carefully.

If you ever get quite far in training you'll learn that press ups , pull ups and sit ups make no difference at all , in fact you rarely do them. Lads PRMC is about attitude towards the rigours and demands of Royal Marines training . It's there to see if you can cut the mustard ... not how many press ups you can do , yeah we know they have set scores e.t.c but as long as your bumping out a good average then you'll be fine. If you want it get down there, prove it and get in training .

Thanks for your replies everyone, I 110% want it and that was my only reason for the hesitation before so I didn’t mean to “seem to be making excuses” at all. Just want to make sure I definitely get that PASS :D

Anyways thanks for the advice its good to get some reassurance off experienced and like minded people… I’ll be there on the 4th giving it all I've got!

Glad I got someone I know on it now Danny we better do Derby proud mate! :D

m88 dont worry trust. I like yourself failed my first PRMC, and I was bricking it about the second one. Just get yourself down there with the mental attitude that you're going to do this. I did, I can't run for sh*t trust me, but you can I just passed the 3 miler by 3 seconds. Everyone was better than me I just gave it everything and I passed. Don't grade yourself let them do that, Just give it everything!! YOU WON'T FAIL

I approached it more as trying to perform at my best, rather than just "hanging in". Give it your best mate! :)

Part of my training over the last few months has been to take part in a few amateur events, like 5k runs, aquathlon etc.
It helped prepare me for turning up and being expected to perform to a high standard with others around.
Would recommend trying this to anyone who has enough time before their PRMC.
