Training.
Just wondering if any other guys are training for selection, if so what times etc are you getting.
I.E:
1.5 miles
10 miles
Press-Ups
Sit-Ups
My current timings are as follows:
1.5 miles (With 25lb bergen, and a no time 1 mile warm up) = 8 mins flat
8 miles (With 45lb bergen) = 1 hr 19 mins
Press-Ups = 75 in 2 mins
Sit-Ups = 61 in 2 mins
Cheers.

Hehehe, I actually tried creatine, it made me physically sick. I think the problem was the fact I train alone most of the time, but recently I've started to train with a friend(Serving Para) which has added some 'healthy' competition. I push myself much much harder now which I obviously wasn't doing before.

8 minute miles with 45 lbs...?
Without consulting my calculator that works out at 12k/hour (ish).
No. Just...No.
I suggest re-measuring your route and re-weighing your kit.
I'd also suggest you stop running with weight as you will give yourself an injury that you wont have the luxury to recover from whilst on the course.

Joe_Cocker, I never said 8 min mile with 45lb, I said 8 min with 25lb. The weight and route are exactly right, I've checked numerous times.
As for running with weight, I have been training for around 9mths now, in the hills, and in the gym to allow sufficient time for my legs to build up which allows me to run with weight.
When I run with weight I have knee supports on 'just in case', and I currently never run with more than 25lbs which isn't a great deal of weight.
The way I see it, to accomplish the times that are set in selection you're going to have to run/jog to keep good timings.
I do agree with Joe_Cocker on the running with weight statement. Those of you that may decide to start to run with weight,
NEVER, EVER RUN WITH WEIGHT IN YOUR BUILD UP TRAINING!
Allow at least 6 mths training before attempting to run with weight, and build up gradually.
Cheers.

Your original post says '10 miles (With 45lb bergen) = 1 hr 19 mins'. This means you would have to run sub 8 minute miles.s79 wrote:Joe_Cocker, I never said 8 min mile with 45lb, I said 8 min with 25lb. The weight and route are exactly right, I've checked numerous times.

Are you sure you have the distance / weight measured correctly ?

I think he's confused kilometers and miles. 10k with a 45lb bergan in 1hr 19 mins is a pretty normal time.
If he's serious about his times though, he may be interested in the World record for a half-marathon with bergan. Don't quote me on this, as the Guinness World records' site has changed it's format, but it's around 1hr 45 mins. It was an RAuxAF bloke if I remember rightly.

Tartan Terrier,
For your interest the guy you are quoting with the world record for the half marathon with bergan is still serving with the Royal Marines Reserve despite being 55. He is a Sgt Major now and still fit as a butcher's dog. I ran a 6 mile speed march with him a few months ago with some reruits building up for their Commando test; they had 22lbs of kit plus weapon, he had a very large bergan. Three quarters of them didn't finish, he did and was running between them encouraging them the whole way (oh and he hadn't slept that night whereas they had).
Impressive as a word does not do him justice.
Rgds,
Von.

CptStabbo, no that's correct. I did the exact same route again today with same weight, re-checked bergen weight and distance(checked distance with map, gps, and pedometer) and they are correct.
Today I was a little slower coming in at 1hr 20mins 38secs.
The route is in the hills, but it's probably the flattest part of the hills, only slight inclines/declines.

10 minute miles with 45lbs is still faster than the fastest, flattest SPEED marches.
You are either:
a)A very desperate individual seeking recognition from anonymous names on a website
b)Ridiculously naturally fit - and will breeze selection.
c)A bloke who has trained very hard, reached your peak and will burnout before weekend 5 on the course.

Well, I'm definately not A) I couldn't care less what people think.Joe_Cocker wrote:10 minute miles with 45lbs is still faster than the fastest, flattest SPEED marches.

I'm quite fit naturally, but in no way would I ever think that anyone could 'breeze' selection, let alone me.
I have trained extremely hard. I trained for 12mths solid, then certain circumstances put things back a little, which caused me to stop training, and I had to put going on selection on the backburner, cancel the course I'd appled for, and had to re-apply for the next course. So I stopped training for about 4 mths in total. I then got back into training and have been training for the last 9 mths solid with a minimum of 4 days per week.
So all in all I've been training for nearly 2 years.
Well that's that, to be quite honest I don't really care if people believe me or not, I'm not here to gain any sort of status, or to brag or anything else like that. The only reason I'm here is to chat with like minded individuals, maybe pass on some of my knowledge/experience, and to gain knowledge and insight from those that have attempted and passed or failed selection.
As for burning out before weekend 5, maybe I will, maybe I won't, but there is only one way to find out. But I think I have the mental attitude to stick with it. No matter how fit a person is I think the major factor with anything strenuous/physical is a persons mental attitude, and the burning desire to achieve a certain goal.
