Elbow problems

Post by riflebutt »

Hey everyone

I've been training for quite a while now doing press ups, pull ups and a bit of martial arts and also noticing the strain these are doing my elbows, they always seem to click now and feel stiff and hurt whilst playing tennis or golf etc and sometimes it feels as if the 2 bones are grinding on eachother.

Bit worrying..
If any of you lot know any advice or have had similar please post, I'm in the queue for a Physio-therapist also.

Cheers

I used to train in martial arts a lot (4+ 3hr sessions a week, in addition to running ever morning) and had joint pains, in particular elbows clicking and ankles too.

On advice of my brother I force-fed myself rest days (as in, no high impact sports or running) to allow recovery. Until then I had not really been having any proper rest days in my routine.
I ended up doing slightly less training in total on a given week, but as I wasn't compensating for joints aching the quality of the training was better and therefore the gains (in fitness and MA technique) were significantly higher.

So I'm suggesting that you make sure your rest days are good. Racket sports, golf etc, running and MA have high impact on the joints and ideally you want to keep these off your rest days, in my opinion.

Could it be a technique flaw in your martial arts?
When I used to teach I came across a few people complaining of elbow joint pain and clicking, when I looked more closley at their technique I found on several occasions that when they were striking, for example a straight right, they were hyperextending their elbow joint by not keeping a slight kink in their arm but they were infact straightening it right out and giving a "shocking" effect to their elbow.
Just a suggestion.

This my not solve you’re problem but I can't see it doing any harm... if you don't already look into cod liver oil, I think I mentioned it on this site a while back but it's very good stuff. I’d definitely recommend it.

no miracle cure, you joints wont suddenly be fine but in the long run they seem to do the job, and it contains other vitamin and minerals as well which is always a bonus. there are other natural joint care products out there why not as you local GP about them or even the Physio-therapist
you’re seeing

every little helps (God I sound like a advert for Tescos now!)

Hope I’m of some use

From a few blokes I've talked to recently with experience on the matter they've said it is probably growing pains as I am 16 and still growing quite a lot. Makes sense to be honest, I'm just gonna take it easy for the while and see how it goes.
