Transfer?

Post by markjb45 »

Hello, I want to join the Territorial Army as a carpenter. I already work as a carpenter and enjoy it and am good at it but have no formal qualifications so thought that the Army would be a good way for me to get some. Plus I quite like the idea of the whole Army thing and am fit and healthy and like sport. The only problem is that I have convictions for drink driving and driving without insurance (both for the same incident), I know it's stupid, but I was trying to get someone to hospital, didn't think to call an ambulance and crashed the car. I was in the lowest catagory of illicit intoxication, no-one was injured, I was completely compliant and as a result I recived the bare minimum sentance. However, because of this I've been told by the AFCO that I can only join Combat units. I'd prefere to do carpentry really and I was wondering if anyone knew if I could join in a Combat unit and then specialise or get a transfer or whether if I managed to get a letter from my boss or saying that I'm a good carpenter or something I might be able to get into it that way? It feels unfair and I feel that both the Army and myself would benefit from me joining as a carpenter. Rules are rules though, but does anyone know if an exception could be made?

You may have to wait until your convictions are spent.

You may be able to join as an infantryman, and transfer later though.

Would you be allowed to join the RLC as a Pioneer? It's not quite the RE, but they do some similar tasks.

Best of luck.
