Running in the heat...

Post by Dickie »

This might not be a brilliant question, but with it being so hot recently, should I change my running routine?

I assume you should take more water (thats obvious, even to me :D), but should I keep doing the same distances and pace? Anything else I should consider?

Just trying to avoid doing something daft!

well you certainly shouldn't reduce the distance of your runs just because of a little heat, i'v actually been running at ten o'clock at night when it's a little cooler but i'm going to do a few runs in the heat as i don't want it to be a total shock when i go down for my PRMC, as long as you keep yourself hydrated you should be fine.

When running in heat take care, lots of fluid naturally, dehydration can last a few days so bear it in mind.
Changing the time of day is also good idea, get up early for a change you slouches !
There is also something else to think about and thats the ozone count, I cycle a lot and go out whatever the weather, one day after my normal sort of workout i felt incredibly knackered, ill in fact, and it was only when i mentioned it to a mate that night that he said to me, you idiot there was warnings all of the radio telling people that the ozone count was particularly bad so avoid doing anything strenuous !
Dunno how it is in UK but here in Germany we get reports on the ozone count, now i check the radio.
as for soaking your t shirt mate i dont think that will particularly help because after 10 mins your body will warm the tshirt up and it will act basically like a wetsuit, or not?

I think I got that wet suit effect today as I was wearing a dark coloured t-shirt in the midday sun whilst running for 7.5 miles, I sweated through it and I felt like a boil in a bag meal, I've been feeling wasted all day aswell.

However I will try soaking a nice running lightly coloured vest in cold water as that sounds like a good idea.

My attitude to running in the heat is listen to your body and hydrate well and you can go running in the sun "pain is weakness leaving the body" afterall. It's not like fit potential forces lads are going to kark it or anything in what is really quite measley temps and humidity compared to some places that you'll have to go.
