Running with or without weight?Any PTI advice welcome!...

Post by Yoz »

During my training with the RMR I have been running with webbing for long distances, however after speaking to a PTI he reckons a couple of high intensity 3-4 milers a week and one long endurance run with webbing would be best and then another PTI recommends running with no weight.

I've seen conflicting arguments around the forums on this. On one hand it's good to run with a bit of weight, to strengthen your legs and prepare yourself better for what you'll face at Lympstone. On the other hand people have said that it's not required, as you'll be trained up to run with weight buy your training staff. I don't really know the definitive anwser, that's just what I've heard. I personally run with no weight, but run hills.

I dont run with weight as such. But i do carry a lot of water / wallet / keys etc in my rucksack whilst out. Keep balanced if you do and dont overload, if it's a strain to put on then it's too heavy in my opinion.

Well , 22lbs rucksack is what I ran with for long distances for about two and a half months. After each run I felt like I could fly. It developed strength in the legs, but the knees ached a bit after hammering it down a long hill. It sounds silly but running with weight actually would have put me at a disadvantage for PRMC I could pretty much do 7.30 minute miles with said weight but the fact was it was not working the body hard enough apart from strengthening the lungs a bit.

I actually can't tell if you think it's a good thing or not! First you say it developed strength in your legs, then you say it did nothing except work your lungs..

After running with the webbing I found I got more strength and stamina gains but as for doing anything with speed involved it wasnt really suitable,I am just wondering what the consensus is all round as I have heard many conflicting opinions from various sources. For PRMC I wouldn't reccommend it as you don't do anything with weight for that.I would prefer to do at least one run per week with around 30lbs.

Depends who you are and what your body is built like, I would say try it but listen to your body! And dont try what I did, a thin back pack with bricks in- cut my back to shreads! Use sand or water as then weight gets distributed evenly.

The likes of me and Brian just get nightmares from running with weights (fear of the return of the almighty shin splints)

Don'r run with weight fella  There is no requirement to, you will just trash your body which is going to age rapidly anyway once you start CTC. Just worry about running with weight the day of the race. A lot of it is psyhcolgicol (excuse spelling), its all about giving it that little bit more when you think you having nothing left, if you can acheive that you will pass any test. I know bloke's that were a lot lighter on there feet than me but failed, not because they couldnt do it, they just didn't believe they could and as a result fell by the way-side.

It does work the lungs and legs but I did not really improve my times on the runs. I think it is just a military thing, in terms of preference.

As Shrek has said don't run with weights. Your Training Teams will get you up to the required level of fitness during your time at CTCRM.

As i am a member of the RMR most of the training is down to the individual so you have to be ready for the weekends and not rely on them to get up to the standard if you know what i mean..I agree with only using the weight for longer runs as the excess weight coupled with the high impact sustained during sprint sessions will only do the joints damage

It is possible to get the same results as carrying weight by just running up and down a steep hill- it really strengthens your legs and doesn't do you any damage. This is especially useful when on the POC you are required to do a 100m and 200m fireman's carry.
