Gunners and their role

Hi there, i have read through every page on this RAF section but i am still a little confused.

I was going to post this on a web site called www.arrse.co.uk which i visit but after reading some threads i would of got abuse chucked at me. As i visit Arrse alot i must admit i did get brain washed into thinking that the RAF Regiment were just aircraft guards who did nothing but stay in camp.

Anyway i visited the RAF website and learned that this is not the case, infact i am becoming more and more interested in joining. But i have some questions due to my state of confusion.

1- Do the RAF gunners get deployed or go on excersize as regularley as a Infantry regiment?

2 - Is Gunner training harder/easier/ than basic training for the Army

3- Sorry if this sounds stupid but do the Goverment and top military leaders know of your capabilities. For example do they see ur Regiment as equivelent of Paras or Marines?

Again sorry if these questions have been answered elsewhere but some help would make my month.

Im joining the regiment but im no expert, but this might be some help...

1) the regt have field squadrons and rapier squadrons, the field squadron is the one most like a "infantry regiment" u could say. read this:

A field squadron (of which there are 6) is organised into flights, each composed of 1 officer and about 30 Gunners. Each squadron has a number of Rifle flights, which are tasked with closing with and killing the enemy, and a Support Weapons flight, which employs machine-guns, mortars and snipers to provide fire support for the Rifle flights.

2) i believe the training is similar

3) iv no idea on that one mate, sorry, although i wouldnt think like that, as long as your happy being in ur regiment who cares what the government thinks

Their site looks OK but it's quite general we have and always will be dedicated to fitness and trainng that's what we do - civies or othewise have been welcome. Before MFAT the web was full of guns and combat sites... we have changed that with a new appraoch

Boney, well that is what we are here for

I used to know a couple of RAF regt guys through this site. One had been in the falks and the other one went for SF selection but didn't make it. These guys were very supportive of MFAT and keen to spread the word about RAF regt as well. Good luck.

You will always get my regiment corps whatever is better than yours, it will never goa nd long may it live I say. It's unit pride and is a good thing to have, you have to get as much factual info as possible and decide what you really want to do.

In answer to the third question the ref redg are included in the ORBAT of the new SFSG along with the paras and marines , so if you want to quantify it like that then yeah they are as well respected by the super ruperts
