Yea, you've really got to listen to your body. If it hurts it's telling you to stop. More's the pity! :D

:( I know, I felt a twinge after a tough circuit sesh on Saturday.
Should have taken the hint but I stubbornly decided to run in the evening, which was tough.
The problem im having with training is balancing running with the other CV work I do (circuits and kickboxing), and not overdoing it.
Being unemployed makes it easy for me to do nothing but train!
Be a right sickener to get up to a standard of fitness then blow it with injury, learning the hard way!

Nearly two weeks since my f@#k leg decided it didnt want to play any more and I still can't walk fast without any pain.

TWO WEEKS.

As for running, forget it. Coming up to my next meeting with my podiatrist and physio, and I guess we're going to have to discuss options beyond orthotics, stretching and a slow build up programme.

Anybody know what the options are for me? Shin splints, suspected stress fracture in my left leg, attributed to over-pronating. My podiatrist mentionned 'tibial drilling', does anybody have an information on this or any other surgical procedures that are available? Of course I'm also wondering if I'm likely to be accepted after surgery? :-?

And yes, I'm more than a little smashed.

i read on some fitness forum that rucking on grass with no shoes goes a long way to prevent shin splints, something to do with stress balance on the joints and feet or something, i guess it could be worth a try, after all aboriginees and masai warriors basically go barefoot and dont seem to get shin splints, there was also something about how innersoles actually make you worse. Flat soles are just unnatural for your feet, there are lots of muscles that need to be toughened up and strengthened from many angles and that only comes from going barefoot.

Your bare feet can naturally absorb 90% of the shock from running, so my podaitrist said, hence why Kenyans can run miles everyday barefoot.
Although to get away with this you'd have to have perfect footstrike etc.

To be perfectly honest they've got a lot worse over the last months. I have almost complete inability to run these days, even with my orthotics, custom runners, physio and acupuncture. Running literally a few metres will have me hobbling for several days, as will wearing dress shoes for walking around (no cushioning)

I'm scheduled for an MRI scan in a couple of weeks, as my podiatrist and orthopaedic consultant (who are both at the top of their respective fields) have little to no clue as to exactly what's wrong. It's certainly not straight up splints or stress fractures. There's even talk of getting world experts in to have a look

Sorry to hear about your problems there dave mate have had them bloody things a while now but no way near as bad as yourself and they seem to be clearing up (touch wood), to still be having problems this long into sugests it's something else other than shin splints especially if your podiatrist and orthopaedic people have no clue!

Anyway am sure everyone on here is thinking of you mate and hope it works out for you with the MRI scan! let us know how you get on.

Good Luck

I had my MRI a couple of weeks ago and have got an appointment tomorrow with my consultant to discuss the results :-?

Dreading it but at the same time can't wait.

My appointment isn't until 6pm though, so whenever I come out will be a good time to go to the pub. Either way I reckon I 'll be able to use a beer.

Wish me luck fellas.

I'm sorry if somebody has already said this just I don't have time to look through all the 4 pages of posts but I spoke to the fitness instructer at my local gym, he may be wrong but he says that seeing a specialist should sort the shin splits problem out. It's where the arch under your foot is in an akward postion so when the arch becomes flatter while running it does not give the shin enough support and so it takes alot more beating then a normal arch. What specialists do is stick a mold at the bottom of your shoe so you keep the arch. His words not mine :) .

Sorry stinky, but thats like describing brain surgery as 'poking around a bit with a scalpel'. Theres a hell of a lot more to it than that.

Alright guys. I started reading this thread but then just jumped from page 2 straight here so im sorry if im going over old ground.

To all you people with injuries - I really feel for you, but from what I read it sounds as though you are sticking in there and seeing it through in the most sensible way. Ive got a few medicals issues myself which I wont bore you all with but it is a real downer so I know how you feel, even though it will be a few years yet before I apply (providing I get over my illness).

Whilst I dont have any knowledge of all this kinda stuff I wouldnt totally sell what 'stinky' said down the river, because when i bought my running shoes I did get given a pair of funny looking arch type things to go in them, didnt have a clue what they were for so just threw them in the bin!! but maybe hes partially correct. I dont know.

Anyways, good luck lads, and remember stick with it xx
