1 Assault Gp/Fleet Protection
1 Assault Gp/Fleet Protection
I've been looking around at the various options for service and considering what I might fancy doing. At first I was thinking 539 Asslt Sqd. because I've always loved the water and so the chance to at once be a Royal Marine and learn to sail and command boats is appealling. As I looked around the webstie a little more however, I came across 1 Assault Group RM and the Fleet Protection Group RM. 1 Assault Gp. sounds very appealing for the same reasons as 539, perhaps more so, but the Fleet Protection Gp sounds like a unique opportunity and in intruiguing.
Here's the link to the official site.
I was wondering if anyone out there had any further knowledge or experience.
Cheers.

I dont have any experience in either of them. However Im wanting to go into either 45 or FPGRM. They both sound like the dogz bawz to be honest. Plus in Fleet Protection Group you get training in a number of areas you might not receive elsewhere in the Corp. FPG attracts me because of the hand-to-hand combat and CQB taught there and 45 because of the mountain training etc... I want to go to 45 to start with and later go to FPG, well thats the plan anyway.

You seem to assume that you will have a choice.!!
I think you will find, that after you have completed training, you will be sent to wherever the Corps thinks you are needed!!
After about 2 years you may then be allowed to "volunteer" for some of these specialist groups, like FPG etc. ( or even SBS if you are good enough!!)
Just don't think that you will be able to go straight from joining - to a specialisation of your choice. You will go to where the Corps decides you are needed.
After that, (18 months), the world is your kitbag!!!
Have a good a time as I did!!

Regarding the FPGRM, my brother just finished doing his first year with them up in scotland. As with a lot of people, he wanted to join the FPGRM because he'd heard that they do emphasize a lot on CQB and working on their fitness levels, but after working there for a year a doubt he would have chosen to do it again. Apart from getting quite a lot of time off, there didnt seem to be many advantages for going up there. They do do a lot of phys, but most the time when they are on duty they are just "standing on the wire."
I dont want to make it sound that the FPGRM is that bad, just that i dont think that most people would do it again given the option. As said above though the problem is whether you will get your first choice posting, they were told that the chance you would get posted to Iraq or Afghanistan if you put down 40 or 42 was very small, but some of them did apply and did get to go fresh out of training.

When I was attached to the Corps, and FPGRM was called Commachio Group, it was widely percieved as a bum draft. Lots of guard duties and driving wagons. I do believe though and someone currently serving could endorse this, that its alot better now. I think they are based over in Faslane and though I only went there twice I do believe that anyone based there becomes a Phys monster or an alcoholic, as theres fark all else to do.

Oh well, that's that then. To be honest, whilst guarding installations does sound boring, what sounds more interesting is:
"Fleet Standby Rifle Troop (FSRT) - The Group provides a number of teams to conduct tasks in support of the Royal Navy worldwide. All the teams receive specialist training and equipment and are held at high readiness for deployment. Many of the teams are specifically trained in non-compliant boarding skills. Those wishing to join an FSRT team are required to serve an apprenticeship in FPGRM and to be specifically recommended as suitable for this highly demanding and rewarding role."

Galant just why do you keep asking questions ref stuff when you seem to be a font of information regarding all aspect of the Corp!?!?!
Yes you can serve on board ship. I thought the Frigates still had Bootneck detachments on to be honest with you. They were once 22 blokes but now are down to 10.

The normal routine for getting guys to apply for a crap Draft is to Gee it up as a once in a lifetime opportunity. Lots of high visibility stuff like leaping off raiders and charging the beach. So Mne Muggins applies and finds himself stuck in a Store counting blankets.
A sure sign of a crap Draft is Lots of Running & Gym workouts. It's the way the higher ups stop boredom and lethargy from permeating a unit. A Commando unit however is the best place. You will of course do Phizz but it will involve you doing what Royal does best. Soldiering. And let face it thats why I joined the Corp and why most of you want to join the Corp.
One Oppo of mine applied for the Naval Party on Deago Garcia. Some little Island stuck in the middle of the Oggin. His job? Customs Officer/Police Officer. The only people that visited the place were Yanks off the US Warships. Boring? According to him it was a place where drunkeness ruled as there was naff all for the Det to do apart from sort out Drunken Yank Matelots.
