Short Sighted Marines?

Post by DropkickedMurphy »

Alright then...So I have been recently considering joining the Royal Marines, Paras or another such 'crack' unit but the thing is, I am a bit short sighted. Do they let short sighted bastards in? If they do, what is done about said short-sightedness? I have done a bit of research but its not really mentioned anywhere.

Thanks then

BTW True story, I kept trying to get into this forum but the damn thing wasn't working, then I typed in 'www.militaryforums.co.uk/comeonyouc**t' and it brought me straight to the site. Guess even with technology there's no substitute for a few well placed words eh?

You do a medical after you apply which has an eye test that you would find at an opticians. They may also ask for your prescription. As long as you are not extremely short sighted you should be ok. I wear glasses and contacts myself, but didnt get rejected.

Use the search button on the top to get more. This topic has been done over and over again.

Yeah well I searched the forum and didn't get any matches. Anyway I guess my main question, having established that it is possible to get in, is how is short-sightedness dealt with practically- I mean I can't see a normal pair of glasses being up to much after you have swum through that tunnel full of dirty water they showed in those old tv ads for example. Cheers.

droppedkickedmurphy I have posted this in another thread but visit this link:

Read through all of it, as they give some common sense advice. I hope it helps put your mind ease :)

Search, been covered a hell of a lot. I think the limit is +/- 6.00 in each eye, but don't quote me, as I said you'll find it by searching.

Obviously I don't remember rightly then...wonderful things these AFCOs, shame most people don't seem to work out why they're there...

Ulp... I'm -3.00 in each eye, and I thought I had a bit of leeway! I better confirm with my AFCO/optician sometime.

I have an apllication form which includes an eye test on it, does anyone know what binocular vision is, because my optician didn't have a clue :-?

something to do with equal eyesight in both eyes when it comes to adjusting your eyes from short to long distances. I think.

Good luck mate, unless your seriously dependant on glasses you should e fine.
Im suprised at how quick the process is moving, within one month the RT test, interview and have the medical and the PJFT If I want.

I think its your combined vision standard. My right eye is worse than my left but when i look at the eye exam board with both instead of indiviualy i can see slightly better.

So on their own my eyes are L 6/36 and R 6/60 but together its 6/36

Or what doc said.
