TA into TA SAS

Post by darkwarrior »

I am hping to get a commision in the TA at some point next year. After 3-4 years I think I'll want to try out to try out for 21 or 23 (all depend on where I'm living).

I've read the official site of UKSF Reserve and was wondering what exactly the "considerable training demands" entail by way of time. Is it of a similiar timescale to regular TA with much tougher training or will you need to spend more weekends away?

during selection /continuation you are looking at every other weekend, every wednesday night and 3 weeks(1 week test week and 2 weeks battle camp) Once in the regiment then its normally 2 weekends every month and every wednesday night you dont have to attend but if you dont then you will lose out on valuable training also if you show commitment then your more likly to get any good jobs that come along

Their bounty requirement is 50 days per year, most guys I've spoken to do 100+.

With any TA don't believe the publicity... its demanding on your time but enjoyable! I think you are looking at every other weekend possibly more depending on the unit.

The best book I have seen on TA Pilgrims is the "Quiet Soldier" this will give a realistic insight into the amount of committment you need to consider selection.

Good luck

Thanks guys. Most of my family are ex-military so I appreciate why you guys don't take too warmly to the insane number of bullshitters who post here. Good to see I can get taken somewhat seriously on the SF board

Every other weekend? Phew! The wife better get used to going shopping by herself.

Is there any truth in the stories that circulate any number of dubious websites that the SAS have a pecking order in terms of where their recruits come from? I.e. love Paras & Marines, hate RAF Regt, indifferent about everyone else. Or was this just the ramblings of someone who read one too many Andy McNab books?

I make no bones about the fact I did TA SAS Selection and didn't pass!

However when I look at the ones who did then I know why I didn't if that makes any sense.... However I have the memory of doing something very special meeting some extrodinary guys who I have a great deal of respect for what they do to this day.

You can do no worse than to check out the "SAS tough enough" DVDs. I know some people in the know think it was rubbish but a fair few many though it was not bad at all. Anyway I will leave it for the real deal to comment on that, which is not me

You say that you know why the guys who passed, passed. Can you give us any insight as to what it was about them that showed success?

When did you attempt selection? How far did you get? Any advice?

LOL I would never assume so much as that!! I think there is a certain type of person who has the mind, body and ability to pass. But they are a rare breed indeed, and you can't fake it, cos it will catch up with you.

You tend to know it when you see it, I can't explain more than that
