I can see where your coming from the missus point of view. It was hard enough for me the first time around to convince her that everything would be o.k., now she's got used to the idea of me not going, springing this on her again, I know would really upset her. Do I avoid trying something I've wanted to do for years so that I don't upset my g.friend ??, but by doing this I could be damaging the relationship anyway 'cause I might become bitter in the long term for not trying. On the flipside going for something I 've wanted to do will obviously make me happier & could even improve our relationship. Too many questions!!!!

Hi Dan - Ive looked into them and went down to the presentation evening at the Manchester Detachment in April, it was rearly good and is an option which I am also considering, my problem is I am sick of the day to day rat race, I feel joining the regulars would get me out of this predicament whilst fulfilling an ambition, maybe I am being selfish and like you said the Reserves is a better option.

I hate to say it but your to old mate unless you cracked more than Basic Trg. Then they may let you back.

I pretty sure the age limit is 27. Well it was when I joined in 73. Things may have changed however so give it a go. Otherwise why not go for the Rubber Dagger option. You will still be a member of the family but will have to buy the first round then the second then the etc, etc! :D

You never know until you try, so just try.

Firstly Wato, Im a big red and it hurts me to say it but well done on the night you deserved it and it was one of the great finals, also personally I feel they should be granted a place to defend the title next year....There Ive said it.

Artist - I was told on the reserves presentation evening that they will take on upto 30, 31 at a push, I thought the regs were the same, I hope so or its back to the drawing board for me! Some comments on the forum regarding PMRC state some of the candidates were 31 ? do you think these are exceptions? Ex regs for example?

According to the Navy website they've upped the age limit to 32.

I was speaking to my AFCO last week and apparently they've raised it from 32 to 33 now :)

Shows how out of date I am ref age limits for joining!

Give it a couple more years and I'll be applying to come back in. I'm only 50! :D Nar I don't think so somehow.

Ok I know this will piss allot of people off, but hey, here goes.

I think if you got kids, a mortgage, etc your first responsibility is to them, especially as they are so young, they need their dad around, I think you’ve left it a little late to think about a career in the RM mate, as you now have other responsibilities that are far more important. Sorry, but that’s just my opinion.

Taffy, for you I think it’s a tough call, but with no kids (that we know of) id say give it another shot whilst you can. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Similar situation

Post by FozzyNumber4 »

Hi guys. I've been in a similar situation recently. I had my heart set on joining as an officer, but my AFCO had mis-advised me about the age limits for POC and I was too old by a couple of months. Gutted isn't the word.

After thinking I wasn't interested if I couldn't be an officer (looking back I really don't know why I had this opinion!) I've surprised myself by thinking of nothing else but becoming a Royal for the last year and now I'm more intent than ever on becoming one. Of course, I've still got to get my, now fiance, to see why I want this and that it can work for both of us, let alone the financial side of leaving a well paid IT job for a recruits wage!

I'd recommend chapter 10 of Nigel Foster's "The Making of a Royal Marines Commando" for anyone with relationship issues.

Good to hear so many other old fogeys like me (I'm 26) are out there doing it!

sorry to tell you this manutd, but the upper age limit is 27 or 32 for previous experience, im not sure you would be elligable for the latter because you hardly did any trainng before you got injured

sorry mate but have a go and see what they say

and taffy, you want to get your green lid and look a warey green b*stard and be pushed to your limit without giving up missus and job why not go for RMR pal

im pretty sure you still pass the same 32 weeks basic training to the same standard? am i right?

good luck to both of you
