TA commitment and University

Post by gseph »

I have recently joined the TA as a specialist at RLC in Grantham. At the moment I have completed my TAFS training and awaiting my Recruits Course Dates, but I also have been accepted into university and do not want any of them to clash.

The problem is the university that accepted me is in New York USA and is for 9months of the year.
Will this affect my commitment of 19+ days if I can only fit it in the summer months of the year (i.e. June-August)? and Would I get any help with my studies financially like grants etc?

Also I have heard of people being flown in to do training with their TA units as it would be cheaper and quicker than a rail warrant. Has anyone got any info on this matter.

Any help would be grateful...

Hey.. Asking your PSI is a good idea. There are a fair few guys (including myself) that have to travel a fair old distance to get to their unit and the travel is paid, whether we go public or private transport. What you need to consider is, are you worth it? If you wanted the TA to fly you in from USA you'd have to be pretty damn special! Dont forget that you need to attend regularly on a wednesday night during your training! I'm not sure what it would be like at a specialist unit but if you were infantry they would probably tell you its not worth it! good luck though!

Trouble is, Concorde retired in Oct 2003, so it'd be a long flight!
