Hoping to join REME as an Aircraft Technician. Apparantly there is an intake at the beginning of May which came as a shock to me...

Well it will be hardly anything like the video we've watched at the careers office. They've changed all the tests. You'd think they'd spent a few quid and update the videos....

Theres the strength measurements, jerry can lift/walk and the infamous 1.5 mile run. (With a warm-up jogging tour of the route).

I hate testing myself on the 1.5 mile run on my own, i cant pace myself properly so i always ended up going to fast and nearly passing out with a mile left.

When i was at RSC it was alot easier with other people there to follow/run past to set a pace

The physical tests we done where -

Heaves

Back Extension (you get strapped in and you have to push your back forward as far and hard as you can) - 2 attempts

Static lift (Bar on floor, and you have to pull it up as hard as you can and you get a computer read out) - 2 attempts.

Dynamic lift (lift 45kg and then 55kg over your head) This was easy.

Jerry can walk - (1 jerry can in each arm both weighing 20kg, and walk for 150m at the most)

1.5 mile run best effort (This is 2 laps of the course, you do 1 lap for the warm up, with some stretching on the way, the start as soon as you get back to the start line, then do 2 laps best effort.

I got an A on my overall fitness mark. Here are the marks i got for each test -

Heaves - i got 10. (They say anything in double figures is exceptional)

Back Extension - I got 9.8

Static lift - Not sure, you cant see this one

Dynamic lift - Lifted both 45kg and 55kg first time.

Jerry can walk - 150m

1.5 mile run - 10.31

These are the grades i got and i got an A and passed comforably. So if you guys are hitting these you have no problem.

There were some guys who got a lot lower fitness marks than the above and they got in.

Just an insight for you boys going.

Also, make sure you participate in the team tasks and make yourself noticed, dont be the 1 not saying anything. You have 3 team tasks and get marked on each 1. Even if you say a load of bollocks, look as if you know what you are doing and encourage the others.

There is also a grenade test which is easy, and a maths test which is quite simple.

It is also encouraged to have a shave before the interview and dress smartly because it is an interview and 1st impressions count. Be confident and you should have no problem.

If you want any more info, just ask and i'll tell you.

Do u mean 55 kilograms or 55 pounds? Cos for a 16/17 year old i would have thought 55kg was a bit much? Lol, unless im just unusually weak for my age?

Go to Argos and buy a chinup bar for £7. only problem is you have to drill 6 holes into your doorframe

I think it is 55 Kilo but only 2 guys dident manage to lift the 55 on my RSC. Even the tiny guys managed it. Because its the weights on rails it feels alot easier

What do you mean by the weight being on a rail? Is it like a barbell? And u have to lift the weight above your head? Or is it some sort of object? Like a big reel of cable, or something?

I'm getting worried about this now.
At the moment I can acheive:

- 66 - 70 pressups in two minutes
- 60 situps in two minutes
- I can do 16 - 20 pull ups (it depends on my anger levels on the day, lol)
- However my 1.5 mile is my weakness, I can achieve between 12 and 13 mins, but I've got shin splints so it's difficult to train on that!
- I can bicep curl my own body weight (65kg)
- I can push over 175kg with my legs

Is any of this acceptable? Enough to pass without worrying too much? I know I have to keep working on my running, since it isn't spectacular.

I've applied for Royal Signals, so if anyone could help me with what needs to be improved, it would be greatly appreciated, since I am a complete worry-bag anyway!

Cheers!

If you can do 20 pull ups you will have no problem with lifting the 55kg.

It is easier than it sounds mate, everyone passed it when i was there.

Those scores are good.

I had shin splints when i was training and still got them but i still managed to train successfully, bit of swimming and boxing, and a lot of work on the cross trainer which helps running without the impact. Also running quite a bit.

My record on the run prior to the test was 11.01 and i got 10.31. The lowest time on the run when i was there was 11.11, and that was out of about 30 people. Best time was 7.40.

Yeah i suppose that makes sense, if you think about it technically, I'm "lifting" my body weight upwards via the chin up bar.

Well that's a load off my chest, big relief. Just got one thing to focus on now and that's the running. Cross trainer you say? I'll have a go on that, alongside running.

Thanks mate.
