Recruiting at the moment
Just thought I'd post some information I gained yesterday from my local AFCO during my OASC debrief.
Apparently, there arent very many places left for Officer intake until April 2006 !, The only places currently up for grabs are airmen/aircrew.
By all accounts, things should be better numbers wise after April 06 and even better by April 07. So those of you who were after getting an Officers place sometime soon need think again !.
Also, the permanent commission is changing from 16 years to 18 years so thats another two years to sign up for.
Another gem of information is apparently because the youngsters going in nowadays are finding it 'tough' they have decided to give people on the new IOT one week off after they have completed six weeks. Something to do with mirroring school terms !.
All information posted has been gained from a very nice man at the AFCO !.
The new RAF motto I believe should be WAIT, WAIT, WAIT AND WAIT SOME MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, eventually we'll get round to you !.

If there are no vacancies, why are they still running OASC Boards?
The RAF won't run boards for the sake of it.
The RAF has a full complement of officers but officers are leaving all the time and so there is always vacancies for officers not as many as before but there is some. At least that what the RTO told us on our Fam Visit.

Recruiting Numbers
I thought my post would stir a bit of interest !.
Another piece of information for all you wannabe engineering officers. If you dont score higher than 4 in your final board grading, chances are you wont get a look in. Apparently it's become one of the branch choice 'hotspots'.
I was given the advice to look at another branch when I go back which will be either autumn this year or summer next year due to lack of places.
Reason : Lets say forty places available -
10 will go on the new scheme that the MOD/RAF has been stuffing cash into for graduates. They are now finishing that course and are more or less guaranteed places. Cant for the life in me recall its name (sorry !).
5-6 will go on the graudates who received thier bursaries from the RAF.
That leaves 24-25 places out of 40 for us civvies, now I'm not a betting man but even I dont like the look of those odds !.
All in all I think TJD has got it spot on, its going to be a bleak year ahead !.

Deferal
As far as I am aware you can defer for a period of twelve months.
Why twelve months you ask ?, because thats how long your medical lasts for !.
Which branch you going for ?

In that order

Hiya everyone
i have been reading all your posts and they have all been very helpful! we have finally got broadband so i have signed up to this site.
I applied last year for pilot, i didnt know what i wanted to do for a career, then i looked into the forces and realised RAF is definatley for me. - The only thing is i didnt know what i was talking about when i went for the AFCO, i definatley didnt do enough research on my chosen branch. - So anyone applying first time round know your branch inside out!!
Needless to say i didnt get!!
I got through the filter interview at my AFCO and they sent my app form to crawell, but i was told i need more 'life experiances' (fair enough)!! But they didnt elaborate on this! So i am now applying 12 months later as instructed. Any way last year i joined my local ATC as a C.I, which has helped immensly. I do more sports/adventure training now and i also fly regularly, is there anything else i can be doing anyone??!
Does anyone know of any good websites to help with aptitude tests? i went to my local AFCO the other day and i have booked my AST for next month.
cheers

IF things are looking much better for april 06 onwards then I can maybe smile a bit more.
being im stuck atm doing a maths course as the afco said I was lacking in that area (its still a sore point this) and that of admin being one of the branches they want atm, which I was applying for. Left me thinking my Timing as usual sucks.
anyhow, couple of questions. And one I should probably know the answer of, but with Admin officer, whats the SEC stand for thats always listed after it?
Another thing as well, for the life experences. what is everyone doing in that regard?
EHG has mentioned the ATC as a CI which ive already enq'ed about and visiting after their easter break (see, timing again being bad
