Training Army Fitness Standards
Training Army Fitness Standards
Im in the middle of signing up and still have time before my physical/fitness tests as Ive just posted my medical for the Army, want to join the Royal Signals.
Basically I want to know if my training schedule is ok. Im moderately fit at the moment (although Im a bit unwell so latest I will be able to train again would be Thursday, after 3 weeks without any).
Im running 4 - 5 times a week 2.5 mile every time and I usually run at speed for the first 1.5 mile and then do a normal paced jog for the last mile. I do pressups, pullups, situps every evening with a progression method, by increasing the amount of pressups, pullups and situps I do, every week. I play golf a lot (lol). I suppose that isn't much but I suppose it's a factor as Im walking for at least 5 mile. Im going to start my swimming up again and I used to go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week doing a lot of running there and doing weights on my legs and upper body.
Can anyone tell me the time I need to be able to run 1.5 mile in? I've heard 14:30 min (Thats bloody slow!) and 12min and 11:30 and 10:30. Which is it?
Would someone be able to give me some sort of feedback on my training and if there's any way to improve. I can run more than 2.5 if I need to, it isn't a hardship as I enjoy running.
Thanks.

For Royal signals you need to be able to do the 1.5 mile run at RSC in under 12:30 and under 11:30 by the end of basic training, but what the book says and your PTI says will be 2 different things.
Its only under 14:30 if your under 18.

Being a STAB I havnt been there and done it but I'll give you my opinion anyway
If i was going regs I would be fit before going in...not overly fit so that you burn out during training but fit none the less.. The fitter you are the better you are at keeping alert during long days and coping with living in the field.
If i was you I would look at running a few longer runs.. Moving towards a few 8 milers every week. IMHO i would be aiming for about 8:15 for my mile and a half at the start of training. I guess it comes down to what you think though! Good luck.

Yeh ill be under 18 when i do basic training ill be 17. I can already do 11:30 if i push myself, so thats not comfortable. Would it be silly to aim for 10 min to do 11:30 comfortable?Gazza85 wrote:For Royal signals you need to be able to do the 1.5 mile run at RSC in under 12:30 and under 11:30 by the end of basic training, but what the book says and your PTI says will be 2 different things.

Depends. do sprint training and timed runs eg 30 mins, 45 mins not 3 miles in...
Yesterday i did a 40 min jog followed by 5 sprint circuits.
You never no byt the time you get to do RSC and basic you could be doing 1.5 mile in 11:30 mins easy and in 10 mins pushing yourself.
That 10 minute time of mine was running on my own, i find it easier with other people there to set the pace for me

Yer ill try some sprint runs while im doing my jogs i.e. between laposts should get my fitness through the roof.
I find the same, i used to run with a pro 1500m and 800m runner and he got me fit for 800m easy just kept on his heels when he ran and did 800m in 2:34 thats my PB and im proud of that although i know people who have done it in 2:15 which is madness...
But thats off topic, Gaz, what do u do throughout the week to keep fit/get fitter?

I do Street runs 3 times a week, normal jogs/runs with sprints at the end of lampost running, this week i'm starting to go running in the morning aswell for 30 mins.
I go to the gym to do bike/treadmil/rowing/press ups/situps and swimming 3 times a week, and i do circuit training once a week ran by a ex PTI who really pushes us which is good fun.
I also do a 1-1 with the PTI in the gym which is normaly weights/running/boxing. The other night i was doing some weights and inbetween a set of weights i had to jab his pads 60 times as hard/fast as i could, that was considered my rest inbetween sets, after the next set it was hooks, then uppercuts.
I enjoy the boxing side of it.

How long are your street runs each time? U do a lot, I used to do tae kwon doe but got bored of it as it was boring as hell and u sound like a dick when u scream ICE when you do a power maneuver, bit like HI-YA in karate....I might start up boxing then progress to kickboxing for extra fitness and plus im tired of getting into fights
(Lost my last one gr).
When i go to the gym i do treadmill for 50min, rowing and i push weights on my legs up to 175kg. I pulled a muscle in my back doing that though so im gonna cut the weights down to about 50kg and work on stamina in my legs.
How many pressups should I be looking at being able to do?And situps?

When i do pressups i usuallyjust make sure my nose touches the floor JUST about and after every 10, hold a pressup in the lowered position for 5 seconds. That knackers the crap out of ya. But its good for strength and endurance and what not so...
Situps i usually do around 60. I dont do more than 75 I dont want to over train my abs.
Is there anything else i should be training? Apart from running, situps, pressups?
What about chins? And squats? Etc

Don't aim for the minimum standard, the fitter you are the easier you will find basic.
When I joined up over 10 years ago the times were 11:30 at RSC at 10:30 by the time you got to basic. I managed something like 11:25 at RSC and by the time I finished basic I was doing it in about 9:00. Got it down to 8:00 after Combat Engineer training.
Good bit of training for you too would be to bin the trolley on you golf round and stick the golf bag on you back, up and down them hills on the golf course with a full set in the bag will strenghten your back, legs and shoulders. Will help you when carrying the bergen during basic.

Yeah trolleys gone and i play more golf now. Played yesterday and Im playing again today. Good thing is if i go for a run in the evening after a day of golf i SHOULD be getting fitter with the extra bonus of getting stronger while carrying the golf bag.
Im swimming and running during the week. I do jogs 4 times a week, and i run between 3 and 5 miles every time and i swim 3 times a week for some cardiovascular improvements.
What do u guys think of that?
