The time between basic and trade training depends, but it's usually not that long. I finished phase one on the Friday to be at my phase two establishment on the Sunday, while most of the entry (chefs and OM's) either started on Monday or stayed in holdover for a week.
The long waits come if you get backclassed (or "training extended" as they call it these days); a couple of MA's failed one of the fitness tests and now they don't start phase two until May 24th

.
And while I did enjoy training on the whole, be warned that the first couple of weeks are absurdly annoying, piles of forms, getting the hang of kit maintenance, more forms, and hours of the most boring briefings you can imagine. Oh, and there are some forms after that too

. But it does get better (honest!), so stick with it and you'll be fine
