WJC you have completely missed the point of everything everyone is saying to you. If you can't handle a bit of banter then you will struggle. What will you say to your CSgt at Sandhurst when he's shouting in your face, spit raining down on you, for what you perceive to be a petty misdemeanour?

You are not being berated for not being able to post, your post gives others an insight into your personality. So far it shows laziness, arrogance, ignorance, poor communication skills and no willingness to learn and take criticism. These may be completely wrong assumptions but that is how you appear.

If you had any nous about you then you could have quizzed me to find about the whole process of becoming an Officer and learnt in 5 minutes what it's taken me 2-3 years to acquire plus one RCB (a very eye-opening experience that is hard to come by). However, with your current attitude I'm not at all inclined to offer you the least bit of help. I feel that my recent experiences qualify me to tell you if you conduct yourself this way in any aspect of your recruitment process you will undoubtedly fail. Make this a learning experience and take the advice being given.

P.S. Althought the above is level-headed and reasonable I do think you are a tit and the thought of you as a leader of men is laughable. F***k off back to your homework child... :D

So Taff and Maverick are you definate "NO's" for his leaving party or shall I put you in the "awaiting confirmation" column?

He's in school now so can't respond, and apparantly we should all be down the pub because we are over 18, if only my kidneys liver and wallet would allow such a thing!

I am really enjoying reading this thread.

I moderate on another forum where I am considered to be a cow of the first order because of my insistence on a decent standard of English.

Slack language doesn't become anyone ..... save it for ur txt mssgs! :D

The main protagonist on 'my' forum is a girlie who has designs on becoming an English teacher, yet finds it impossible to string a decently written sentence together.

She has absolutely no chance of realising her ambition unless she takes heed of the advice which is offered to her by myself and other members.

Jayne.

Specific advice....let's start with the obvious:

1) Read a good broadsheet as well as something like The Economist. Don't just think it's foreign affairs you need to be up on. Make sure you have a comprehensive knowledge of and formulated opinion on domestic affairs.

2)Services knowledge - know where the Army is, what it's doing and what kit it has to do it!

3) Be yourself (you will hear that a lot, annoying I know but true)

4) Be fit. BPFA is a doddle but assault course is knackering and a good one to impress on.

The less obvious...

1) Command tasks - make sure you are always busy and strive to be involved in what's going on at all times. Make sure you pipe up with ideas for solving the plan - they need evidence of problem solving ability. I was marginally quiet on this and this was a major fault of mine. It wasn't that I didn't have ideas I just wasn't quick enough to speak up before others! I had a serving soldier from the RE - he was a Corporal and had been teaching these things to other soldiers so I didn't get a word in edgeways (thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it).

2) Individual Command Task - Base your team brief on the problem solving process given for the planning ex - I did and was noted for giving a good briefing. Don't worry if you don't complete it it's how you carry it out that counts. Make sure you instill a sense of urgency without going OTT.

3) Planning Ex - accept now that your plan will be lacking in some areas and you will be grilled on its weaknesses. Stay solid and don't flap when they chuck q's at you about it. If it is shite then admit it gracefully! Learn all your minute/miles so you can answer time/distance q's rapidly. Stay on the ball when the others are being questioned as you may be asked questions.

4) Interviews - the usual, why you want to join the Army e.t.c. Think these answers through before hand. Vice Pres. interview is the key one so be sharp for it. If you come across as an all round good egg you'll be fine!

5) Group discussion - say your bit and make sure it makes sense. Simple.

To be honest Day 2 is key - make a good impression here and you're well on your way. The impression I got is Day 2 is 60% of the battle and Day 3 is about 40%. Day 1 & 4 are fairly irrelevant (as long as you don't royally screw up). One thing I did was to try too hard in certain aspects i.e. trying to find loopholes in the rules on the command tasks and ended up appearing brash and raffish.

In summary I'd say that ultimately either you're the right type or you're not. In my experience I tried a bit too hard and ended up betraying my true character. Trying to get as much info as possible regarding RCB is understandable but there is little you can actually prepare for. Just make sure you give sufficient evidence for the following qualities and you should be ok:

Teamwork
Communication
Problem Solving
Leadership/Organising
Character (i.e. determination, likeability (if there's such a word) e.t.c.)
Fitness

Is there anything you are particularly worried about King_duck? If so ask away.

All that bloody typing and you're not even going to RCB?!?!

BPFA at RCB is actually bleep test rather than 1.5 mile run. Required standards are 10.2 on bleep test, 44 press ups and 50 sit ups (I think). Once you reach these you stop. This is probably the LEAST challenging and LEAST important of all the tests so forget any concerns about it straight away. Any fool can get fit but it takes a certain type of person to lead men.
