Well depends. You might want to specalise in something you aren't doing in civvy street i.e. close protection, special investigation etc.

I've heard mixed things too, but it's just down to what you want at the end of the day.

Just a thought but have you considered 3 Sqn (Aux) Tactical Police Wing (TPW) RAF Police ? Currently based at RAF Henlow, Beds. Currently recruiting for the newly formed sqn, The TPW role is expeditionary and there are good opportunities for travel and specialisation.
And no I am NOT a recruiter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hantslad!
I'm not trying to influence your decision mate but rumour has it that the oggies on the Wing tend to get the Gucci jobs like flying to the states amongst other places . allegedly this is seen as a good retention technique!

Do you actually have to be a police officer in civvy street to join the TA RMPs, or can you start from scratch?

No you're welcome to start from scratch! Often people who have no previous law enforcement (that sounded a bit too Spam! "Welcome to the United States Planet Police!") make better candidates as they come to the start line without preconceptions and often bring relevent skills they weren't aware they had or didn't think were useful!

I had the mis-fortune of working with 5 RMP (mostly STABS) on TELIC, normally STABS are the same as everyone else, good & bad. But RMP STABS (NE Div) What a bunch deeek heeeeds.

However, they were mostly Doris', so that's one good thing. (I think)

As I said earlier the best thing to do is pop in to the Wing for a visit and a chat ! aes69 is a good point of contact if you can ever find him back in the UK! (DON'T call him an OGGIE for f*&^ks sake though, He's Reg!) When he is in UK he can normally be found in one of the local pie or cake shops!!
