Peak Cap Modifications.

Post by AirForce »

I notice that in some British Army Regiments, particularly the Guards and the RMP, some members modify their Peak Cap so that the peak is shorter, close to the forehead and sitting on the bridge of the nose. This would appear to cause the wearer to hold his head back and look down his nose at you, which I guess would be the purpose of the modification.

I have also seen members of the RAF Police and the RAF Regiment wearing the peak cap in the same manner.

My understanding is that the modification is carried out by slashing each side of the peak and then re-stitching it into the desired position. Apparently there is also a wedge placed inside the cap behind the cap badge?

Do these cap modifications, (I think its called slashing the peak) have official approval and if that is the case, then why arn't the caps shaped that way during manufacture?

many rmp have slashed peaks mate myself included, the aim is not to look down on people but to stand upright and straight like a smart soldier, i think , and i may be wrong, but guards hats come slashed and it's only us nice monkeys who have to do it by hand.
look smart on parade and foot patrols but a pain in the ass to drive in...........lol

Slashed Peaks

Post by AirForce »

Thanks for the reply.

I must admit that the Red Cap complete with slashed peak does look the part, especially in Dress Blues.

When it comes to driving, I guess that is the reason that the beret is more commonly worn during operational duties.

The RACMP wear the same coloured Beret as the RMP, but instead of the peak cap they the wear sloutch hat.

I'm not sure if the same nick names apply in the British Army but here are some Australian Nick Names for the various Corps and Services.

Military Police - Meat Heads (from the colour of the beret)
Logistics Corp - Cockroaches or Blanket Counters.
Catering Corp - Plate Layers or Tucker f@#k or Fitters & Turners.
Medical Corp - Scab Lifters.
Sigs Corp - Interflora
SAS - Chicken Stranglers.
RAEME - Spanners.
Aviation Corp - Blue Bells
Intel Corp - Spoofs

RAAF - Blue Orchids

RAN - Pussers

The Guards caps come in 2 parts, the top or actual hat remains the same through most of the ranks, the peak however, has the ranks of the bearer on it. So rather than changing the whole hat, the peak just gets changed.
Can't remember the exact lines, but, it goes something like this, single thin gold band, pte, l/cpl, single thin & thick gold band, full screw & L/Sgt, etc etc....... been away for some time so I do apologise for any inaccuracies.

And as previously mentioned, slashing the peak makes ou hold your head up straight, thus presenting a smarter soldier.

The RAMC, Robbing All My Comrades
The RA The 12 Mile Snipers
RAOC The galloping grocers

In some Regiments you could wind up being charged with damaging Army property after slashing the peaks on your caps
