Shin Splints

Post by Rocko »

I have a sinking feeling that I have shin splints in my left leg, it feels uncomfortably tight when i walk and run.

What is the best way to recognise shin splints?

Also, I leave for ATR on the 24th, so what would be my best course of action to treat them?

any help appreciated gents.

Having been there I found that RICE works pretty good. With the empathises on REST!!! Also read this link, it will give you some strengthening exercises that are useful.

Also use the search facility top left, type in shin splints and you’ll get more info than you need.

All the best.

Rest is the best way to releive the pain. Try gently stretching your shins by kneeling down, sitting back, and flattening your feet out (if that makes any sense). Do it carefully though, you dont want to cause more damage.

Also, you might want to see a specialist, there are many things that can cause them, and its not always overtraining or excessive pounding on conrete, and if you dont get it fixed you could see the problem re-occuring.

Oh yeah, if you run a lot on road etc, dont be a tight with your money and get decent trainers!

When i 1st started training last year i found i had chin splints in both legs. Although after a few weeks of gentle runs they seemed to go for some reason. I would advise not running if you are in pain, make sure you always stretch correctly and don't start off running at too great a pace, just ease yourself into a run until you feel comfortable the chin splints won't return.

What are shin splints?!

Been reading this topic for a while and haven't found much on the net to tell me enough about what a shin splint is. Know it comes from exercising though and stress.

OK, I do a 3 miler and a 5 miler every week, plus sprints every evening. All this is done on country roads, am I at risk of getting shin splints?

Zak :-?

You could be, its not just running on the road that does it, its the way you run eg overpronounce, slap your feet instead of heel to toe and sometimes what footwear your wearing.

Try doing a bit in your local park.

I did a 5 miler yesterday all on grass/soft soil and my backs hurting so i have had to give it a rest today.

I do fartleks round the footie pitch at the local park, but for anything long I prefer something with a few bends and hills. I wear Reebok running trainers.

What overpronouncing?

Thanks,
Zak :)
