Louis,
I know how you feel. I first applied to join when I was 16, but got stopped by my parents. Then I applied to be a RM Officer in 2001 & after passing various interviews & getting a date for POC I failed the medical on my hearing. Was absolutely gutted. My lifes dream thrown away like that.
After a bit I thought, sod it, they're not going to stop me. So I tried the RMR. Spent 5 months doing phys in holding troop at RMR London before failing the medical on the same thing (I was two points out if I remember correctly).
Things have got a bit better now as I seem to have worked out what is wrong with my ears & why I failed the test. I can't clear the pressure in my ears properly which leaves me with 'muffled' hearing. This doesn't affect me day-to-day or when in the field, but it means that I'm crap at hearing tests. I'm getting this sorted next year through a sinus washout so should be OK to join next year.
All I'm saying mate is don't give up. If it is your dream then you should try absolutely everything to get in. Have you appealed against the decision? I know at least two people who were told at various times of applying to the military that they would not be able to do the job. They didn't give up, they appealed and harrassed (for want of a better word) the docs until they relented. Try it, it's worth it.
One other thing. No matter how bad things seem now, there is almost certainly some good that can come of it. While still gutted that I'm not currently in the Royal Marines & worried that I may never get in due to the medical I feel with hindsight that going to uni instead has probably been for the best. You may feel the same.
Plus, in a few years time the RM might allow laser eye surgery for applicants. If so, get it done & you're in.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
Dan

Louis,
Why not get over to the US asap (as you getting a green card takes time) and join the SEALS through the SEAL Challenge Contract which takes you straight from Navy Boot Camp to BUD/S. They allow eye surgery and if you are a good recruit they will make sure you get your eyes fixed.

Good luck!

Cheers mate. I'm not the type to give up easily, I've been through a fair bit of shit in my life and it's taught me not to give up.Louis wrote:IGood luck with getting your hearing sorted mate, I hope it works out for you. And look on the bright side as well, at least you don't need glasses!
With regards to the hearing I'm pretty confident that I'll pass. Misplaced confidence maybe, but one can never give up and all it does is drive me harder when I train.
Oh, and I do wear glasses, but only occassionally.
