Hey
I've got to admit I love this forum and I'm on here practically everyday! I'm reading every post going up but I need a little help from those of you who have gone through the process....
The fitness brochures that afco give you aren't very insightful, I've applied for Supply Officer and since it's an officership if I ever get in they're gonna do everything they can to break me, so I've started my training - after work I'm clocking:-
3 sets of 50 : situps, pressups
3 sets of 11 pull ups
then 3 - 4mile run
----- at weekends I skip this and head to the hills doing 7 mile walks proper off road.
what else should I do and how do I step it up, any insider tricks????
I'm rubbish with the speed/ time/ distance calcs cause my mental arithmatic is poor to say the least, bought a gcse revision guide to step that up! gonna try and dedicate time to that but is there anyone else out there that might have example questions, notes on the net? anything?
Aircraft recognition - tricks? any features that are easy to spot?
Lastly i've got my interview on the 8th at afco, I want in bad - Officer if possible, Trade just as good if not better! Hints, Tips, do any of you have experience with supply and can give me an all round fully blown, no holes barred idea of job description to go in there and come out confident.
I've a good working knowledge of politics and Raf locations and so on.
I bought a small pocket sized notepad, dedicated a page to a different Raf base and I carry it around with me, if anything comes up in the news i jot it down in my notebook ie... kinloss, nimrods, eurofighter....ra ra ra!
thanks for listening me out, greatly appreciate anyones help, I want this so bad, give me an SA80 instead of civvy street anyday!

yanks
I've had three conversations with americans in my life and all have ended in arguements cause:-
1) England isn't the capital of france! (gcse geography)
2) The british empire was far bigger than the Roman Empire
3) America was formed by the British and not the indians as the arguement played out. "We gained our liberty from the indians"
muppet!
Also.... to my amazement, they've built a Subway sandwich shop in Iraq, check the website.... middle of a war zone, Bloody waltons!

Just thought i'd point out that i'm a yank living in the UK, i served 9 years in the US military, and now am in the UK Military. The yanks you had those conversations with represent about 1% of the population. Dont tar us all with the same brush please

And hey! Subway makes damn good sandwiches, the meatball sub with cheese and salad is great IMO......no matter where you go you gotta eat......and you do get sick of MRE's fast, not to even mention the UK rations!!!!

If you get into the RAF you will occasionally get to work with the US, and you will see that both their aircraft and personal........are far from the standard some believe, I can find equal fault with those i have served with on both sides of the pond, so i tend to give everyone a chance to prove they are idiots, before i label them as one!
Best of Luck
John

Jim (I assume that's your name!),
Next time you visit the AFCO, grab a copy of the Royal Marines fitness brochure...fat better than the RAF one. Also, do note that the RAF brochure was printed for AIRMEN preparing for RTS. As such, it bears no reflection on what you require to succeed at OASC (or start IOT).
Run, run and then run some more. Cover distance (7 miles), do hill sprints and practice doing sprint shuttles. The only fitness assessment is a 'bleep test' - aim for level 13+

The supply branch is hugely varied.
Make sure you know the specialist training programme (when, where, how long) and IOT (phases, exercises, assessments).
When you start in the supply branch, you usually run a supply flight on a station (MT, Domestic Supply Flight, Petrols/Oils/Lubricants (POL) etc etc etc). You can expect a tour on Tactical Supply Wing (TSW) at a later date. After that, you may move into a specialist area - explosives, POL etc. Later in your career, you will become involved in policy, planning and procurement.
For more info, search the net for some RAF Station websites and ARRANGE A VISIT TO AN RAF STATION (you may be surprised what some perseverance will get you).

Biggles,
Sounds like great advice, thinking about entering a half marathon then it's something to talk about in the interview and gets me fit for the training.... reckon i need a lot more dedication of my maths and the role I'm applying for! Sounds so exciting... when I went for the officers presentation every one wanted either pilot or engineer... if this is the case in other afco's round the country and a third of them apply direct then I'm hoping i'm in with a better chance. I'm not a glory hunter - just want to focus and bish bash bosh... job done!
mate if you've anything else on supply then you're amazing... you've already been a big help, so feel cheeky asking but I will any how!
here comes the speed distance calcs!
Johnnyboy, I'd have to say Chicken teriyaki with honey mustard is in close competition... I'm just after the stamps. Wouldn't go as far as to say all US are dumb, just the 1% i've spoken to, just like any other group - baring in mind our society built on burberry, hooliganism and page 3.... As I've been taught " Don't try to out think people who don't think!"

Supply Officer
Biggles1211 has given you sound information in relation to the importance of gaining an insight into the Branch that you are applying for.
When you appear before the Specialist Interview Board, it is important that you have an understanding of what an Officer in the Supply Branch actually does and you also need to be able to demonstrate to The Board how you researched such information, ie visited RAF Station and spoke to FLTLT Jones who is the Supply Officer and he told me ..........
You would also need to be able to give reasons as to why you wish to become an RAF Officer and also why you want to be Supply Officer in the RAF.
As Biggles states, "The Supply Branch is huge and varied"
