Pay Injustice

Post by FooBar »

Does anyone else think it is extremely unjust that if you want to join the navy or army or whatever, then you have a meer 8 weeks training, then pass out and go onto earn an increased salary (roughly an extra 2k)? :P

Where as if you're a bootneck, you go through the longest and most arduous basic infantry training programme on the globe, lasting 32 weeks, all on recruit training pay. When (if) you do eventually pass out, you start earning what the army squaddies etc have been on for the past 24 weeks, when you are considered to be an elite soldier. :(

Personally, i'm not in it for the money, and this doesn't put me off in the slightest, but this seems a little unfair to me.
Yes, yes, i know life's not meant to be fair, but where's the incentive in that?

I think its an injustice that footballers, TV personalities, lawyers etc (but most especially footballers: seethe, fume ) get paid hundreds of thousands a year, but the people risking their lives are stuck with a comparitive pittance.
But thats a different thread.

It costs over 3 times as much to train a Royal compared with a US Marine...

The army don't do 8 weeks then get full pay. Phase 1 is 12 weeks, followed by trade training, which is usually another 12 weeks. So in total it's around 24 weeks. And once RM's finish training, as Sticky said, get paid more than a regular Army Infantryman anyway. It's not that bad a deal, really.

I see. :) That makes it a bit clearer.

I didn't think they'd think they sell us short

I'm pretty sure a young Marine straight out of the box is on the lowest earning band, equal to a matelot who's just finished his 8 week basic or a pongo after his 12. It's an arguement that is dripped about fairly constantly...for all the hard work we put in, being the 'elite', why is there nothing comparative to 'para pay'? I heard the CFT and ACFT were adopted the last time the High Sea Lord did rounds of 3 Cdo bde in the hope of getting us 'Commando' pay. Alas, we have the CFT, ACFT and no extra pay. Wazz.

The pay you start on stinks anyway. You'd earn the same wage stacking shelves. Like you say people join for reasons other than financial but it would be nice to at least get the same pay as the other forces.
