Had my current PC 18 months now, it's a Compaq Presario with an AMD Athlon 2800 thingy, its the second AMD I've had.
Given all things being equal, does the pentium do a better job?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

im sure some techie will say the pentiam is better but for what i use my pc for i dont think i would notice the differance.

This gives you the low down and what it's all about.
Conclusion seems to be that there's little to choose. It seems bit like fast bikes, more BHP means more bragging capacity in the pub but very few folk can actually use all the power all the time.

I have an AMD XP 3200+, for the pentium that does the same job I was looking at about an extra 80 or so quid. As archie said, at these speeds its all about bragging power than computing power, the Pentium has more prestige, but honestly the AMD is cheaper and just as good. I'm a fairly heavy user, playing top spec games and it copes superbly and will do for some time.
There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count & those who can't.
In reality the difference between the Pentium 4 and the AMD would not be noticable for everyday use, to make use of the fancy functions of the processors the applications have to be written that use those functions. As most applications work with either you can assume they don't bother. The geeks who benchmark their machines and watercool them etc will tell you different, but I prefer to use mine not just watch it run benchmark progs.
