I'd re measure the route mate. 5 miles in 27 mins would be a good marathon pace!!!

Get a cycle computer for your bike and calculate the distance of your route accurately.

Cheers, I do try to push myself each time I go for runs. The route is actually slightly shorter but only by about 2/300 meters. My maps are turd. The Para battalion scare me with the milling! I spoke to a Sergeant Major who is now a rozzer, he asked me if I am a naturally aggressive person?? WTF, He showed me the Human crossbow and picking someone up by 4 pressure points on the neck. What the heck is Milling? I will finish up my college year and them apply. PS, Thanks guys for all the cracking info I will do my best to do the fitness! I also have a more built upper body than lower body, I am trying to get my times down for the 2 miles but it seems I have not don't the 2 mile jog for about 1 week now. Better start. My GP said I should try to do a Mix of sprints and endurance runs which give me the speed and endurance for Para selection, should I follow her advice? Cheers!

Milling is where you beat the lining out of your opponent (Approx same height and weight) for one minute using boxing gloves. It is a test of controlled aggression.

Again, I am speachless for the priceless info I am getting. I do have a bike but it is a bit turd, On a normal excercise bike and can do about 4.8 KM on it in about 8 minutes. I have big steps but after the 5 miles i get knackered! :( When I went on my recent field-craft weekend with my squadron, I was for some reason fitter thank all of the instructors and NCOs. By far, but there was only 1 instructor who is fit and he was lagging. It was very motivating being first and more determined. I think it gave me self confidence! I am really looking forward to the training. For some reason the bastard NCOs can't punish me, whenever they threaten everyone for runs, I always smile and they try not to make everyone run because they know I love them. Is this a little cocky, will it do me any favours in the mental challenges or am I going about this wrong? Cheers, lads! :)

that's just over 5 and 1/2 minutes a mile. It's possible, but the world record for 1 mile is just under 4 mins. And that's ONE mile, I'm sure that by the 3rd mile even the record breaker would be closer to 5 minutes a mile. Check the map again, mate.

Yes the distance is 4.6 Miles. err, 7 kilometers or something like that. I try not to take any rests or walk. Maybe a few seconds rest to catch my breath, then back to running. I weight alot. I can keep a constant pace with my running speed and steps. I am 6'2(did I mention this) so I have a slight ease in running. I am having problems running in webbing(weekends on camp) It keeps flailing about like it has a life of its own, Should I try to make it a part of the trousers by feeding the belt through the trousers?? Will this help or?? Also what can I do with short back Bergen with no alloy frame(sorry if this is off topic)????

I also read earlier..you have a Heart Rate of 45BPM? Is this at rest?

If it is true, and you're running just short of 5 miles in that time then you should have tried entering into the olympic tryouts! A heart rate lower than 60 is knows as 'Bradycardia' and is common amongst most top athletes so below 50 is very good!!

Is it? At rest mines been as low as 53bpm. My missus has had a rate as low as 50 (she's a gym rat as well) the only problem is, I struggle to reach my target heart rate when doing cardio. At 23 its 158 bpm and even pushing myself flat out, sometimes I cannot get above 145-150 bpm. Any of you who know about all this stuff know why? As I do a lot of cardio, have i reached a point where my heart doesnt need to pump as fast while training or something? (maybe I should start a new post rather than jumping into someone elses, but the topic did spring up.. :D

If your heart rate is ABOVE 60 then you havent been training very hard. You will find that nearly all athletes, including regular people like you and me, will have a HR below 60. I believe some Ironman triathletes have a HR around 30bpm.

Also many people can run 5 miles in that time. In fact if you look in your local paper you will see a fair few people who can run 10k (6.2 miles) in around 30-33 minutes. Also olympic marathon runners can stay at 4-4:45 for all 26miles.

As you do more and more C.V work, your heart gets bigger and stronger. This then increases ur Stroke Volume of your heart meaning your heart has to do less work to supply your working muscles with oxygen. This means that you need to push yourself a little harder mate, as it is still possible to reach your optimum HR. If i remember correctly, to work out your MAX HR, its 120 - your age. So technically you should be able to hit 197BPM.

Happy Training,

If you want to get a more reliable measurement for your MHR have a look at this.. http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/hrm2.htm

The method of 220-age is often out by as much as 15bhp
