I'm going to uni in September and really want to get involved in the Rugby team. I'm well built (6ft 1, 15stone, lean).
What Im getting at is I haven't played it much (went to a school where we were only brought up on football) but I am fairly fit and strong. Can anyone give me tips on training for the game, what position I would suit and any general advice on making a good impression when joining a new team.
Thanks

Training For Rugby
Uni in Sepember
Sounds like you'd make a suitable lock forward (second row). Don't have much advice really - just make enquiries when you get to Uni and be honest with them - if you try and blag it they'll suss you within about 5 seconds.
Actually, you might want to buy a book on the rules to familise yourself with: Rugby, A Player guide to the rules by derek robinson is pretty good (ISBN: 0-00-713614-5)
Whatever go along and have a crack - if your not that good on the pitch try and make up for in the bar

How fast are you over 100 meters?
Do you have a good pain threshold?
Whats your upper body strength like?
If you have good vision (ability to read the game) and good hands I'd put you into n.o. 8, taking your size into account, theres nothing worse than having to stop a 6ft+ heavy, fast forward comming at you.

training for rugby
When training for rugby the most important thing is weight training and speed work, get involved with a local club and they will find the position that you are best suited to. Remember the type of fitness required for rugby is quite different to that required for the military. Rugby is a power sport so you need to be able to make big tackles and and short explosive runs.
