bullying is at an all time high in the army

Post by Nemo »

I've always wanted to join the army, however, i was speaking to an ex-green jacket today and he said if i was to join as a 'grunt', the chances of me bein bullyed are high :(

The reason for this is my good education and 'good speech'

is this true :-?

I was in the Army when life was a lot tougher, but I never saw any bullying. It was a time during National Service where on one side of of your bed space there could be a belted Earl and on the other an ex-convict, but we got and made the best of it. Leg pulling yes and hi jinks happened all the time but that was a part of Army life.

Whilst I am not going to say that there has never been a case of bullying in any of the armed services sadly all to often bullying or race is all to often given as a reason as to why some individuals cant hack it.

rather than just say they did not like it in the forces and they were crap, saying they were bulled etc seems to give some form of street cred on their return home.

On the other foot some good instructors have seen their lives change sharply due to some crabby little scronk.

Possibly the worst case I knew of was an ex cadet who was totally crap and who left the forces after stateing he had been bullied in all sorts of manner , sort of the acusations totally unbelievable. So you would think that your unit might protect you but his mum had dragged a solicitor into camp along with her MP, the shit flew and someones head had to roll.

The end result was two instructors got drafts to units and the young man went home a hero to rejoin his cadet unit where he had been seen as a rising star.

He stayed with his cadet unit becoming an adult instructor and two years later was punched in the mouth in the Sgts Mess bar, where he was living whilst on a Cadet Training course, he was now a SNCO and with little effort could use the mess. He had of course been recognised by one of the ex cpls from his training team now a SNCO who did not take kindly to this scum bag putting his arm around him and calling him oppo.

Ask your freind as to how long he spent inthe army, if he was bullied and if that is why he left and how often he saw this bullying.

I could see them taking the p*ss if you seem to speak with a little upper class twang, but I can't see anyone really bullying you physically. As long as you don't think you're better than anyone because of your education, then I'd guess you'll be fine. Everyone gets some stick for something or other, that's just the Army. But real bullying is a different thing.

Dont worry about bullying. Alot of people really confuse bullying with the disaplin given by the staff. I can tell you now from experience, you WILL get into alot of arguements with other recruits in your platoon (often close to breaking out into fights). You will constantly have the Corporals and other staff, moaning, shouting and taking the piss out of you. It is not bullying! There are hundreds of things they can make you do - from pressups and situps, etc in puddles, to hosepiping you down and making you iron your clothes dry, to writing things in perminent marker onto your face, etc. This is NOT bullying. This is army life. Some people can hack it, some cant. Those who cant often think its bullying.

The army has a ZERO tollerance for bullying. This does not mean that it does not go on, but generally it does not happen, whatever regiment you are in. Sometimes you get the one issolated insident, which one person will tell someone about. That person will tell 3 of his mates, who will in turn tell 3 of there mates, and generally the shit roles down hill. You can see what im getting at here.

Bottom line is, dont worry about it. It generally does not happen! And if for some odd reason it does happen, if it goes reported, it will be sorted out immediatly, in some cases, the one doing the bullying been discharged from the army. Dont worry about it, and if you want to join the army, dont even let the idea of bullying stop you. Go for it!

My mates brother finished basic training earlier this year...Within 2 weeks he had been given the nickname 'spiffing' as he had a fairly posh acent. 10 weeks later he passed out and had made loads of good mates.
Its not bullying, just a bit of fun and motivation. Enjoy basic and keep a sense of humour with you!

Even the Officers get nick names, we had one chap who could not read a map, his nick name was "Sign Post" as he was always looking for one, and he was called it to his face by the men and the rest of the officers.
