when was the last time you run a defrag?Rogue Chef wrote:Ahoy there!
I've got a problem with my PC. It is very slow and some applications won't work at all.
I have tried virus checks, maintenance wizard, smart restore and spybot, but to no avail.
Any ideas?
Start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk Defragmenter
It takes for ever but it cleans up your drive and arranges the files for faster access.
What are your specs btw?

Even though your hard disc has loads of space, all the files might be out of order, the defrager sorts that out, otherwise try a program such as cacheman, can be downloaded from http://www.download.com and you can configure your PC for different tasks eg playing games, multitasking, multimedia, if you have low memory etc.
There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count & those who can't.
Rogue Chef...
Go to Windows Explorer, Control Panel, open Icon 'Internet Options'... when open, click button 'clear temp internet files' and if yr XP click cookies as well.
This file has never been cleared of crap.
Good luck
Further to Defrag.... ensure you have everything turned off that includes screen saver and any auto shut downs etc, defrag dos'nt like aynthig going on while its working

Ahoy there!
Thanks again for all the advice lads, I will persevere but the problem appears to be some form of corruption.
I cannot access documents through Windows explorer. Some other facilities and applications just freeze the computer. For example I cannot open the control panel.
Keep the ideas coming though, otherwise I am going to have to reboot and start from scratch.
