Yes, it certainly kept us all on the edge of our seats! I think we played very well but it was a shame Rooney got hurt. But then if we'd lost and we'd still of had him on the team, the papers would have slaughtered him today.

The ref was awful all night. Every time someone even looked at a Portuguese player the wrong way he blew for a free kick. Plus a few of his terrible decisions:

1. The foul on Rooney (that broke his foot) was given as a goal kick despite the fact that it was a foul and the ball did not cross the line.

2. The Sol Campbell goal that he disallowed. WHY??? Terry did not foul the keeper, any half-wit could see that. Even if the ref missed it, the linesman shouldn't have.

3. Two of the Portuguese penalties, the players stopped halfway through their run-up to the ball. This is illegal in the rules of football.

People have also made comments about the state of the penalty spot. However, I don't buy into that as it was the same for everyone on both sides.

Admittedly we did not play well once Rooney had come off & at times we were out-played by the Portuguese. However, you can still sum up the game in two words DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!

I am glad that there doesn't seem to have been any trouble after the game as that would have brought shame on our country.

P*ss off. Have some support for Britain for once instead of your own petty-minded little country. Why is it that the Scots are always so bitter towards the English? They get more out of our Government than we do despite having a population smaller than London.

Got to agree about the "some" of the Scots though they seem to have a huge chip on their shoulders when it comes to England doing well in anything.

I must have missed that. There was no mention of any trouble on MSN news (which scans all news companies I believe) which is why I said what I did.

I'd have to agree with you that these people are morons. After the game I felt pretty angry with the ref & p*ssed off that we had gone out. However, how is beating someone up or smashing things up going to change that? These people bring shame on our country.

That was not directed at you dannyd, it was more a rant in general at all those who think 22 extremely well paid prima donnas kicking a ball round a field is something worth fighting over. As for anybody who cried when we lost all I can say is "get a life"


You may have picked up I'm not a fan

I did watch the 1966 world cup in Germany(as a young lad) in a pub and never heard a bad word said about England or the English. How times have changed!

There are 30000 Portuguese who live and work in and around Norfolk, 15000 live in or around Thetford. The Red Lion was surrounded by some 200 thugs who tried to destroy the pub and those inside it, it is run by Portuguese as too is a nearby cafe.

The police have arrested 11 people, apparently the tensions have been building up for a fortnight culminating in the angst last night after the Portugal V England match.

The Portuguese who live and work in this area work on the fields and in canning factories under UK Govt work permits, so the cheap strawberries you may be eating for your afternoon tea whilst watching Wimbledon Tennis Championships may well have been picked by these same people.

I can't help but to be amazed that so called top footballers like David Beckham who are £100,000.00 per week can't even score a penalty.

Reading this gave me a chuckle. I've been to Scotland a fair few times (always for mountaineering trips), the people I have met have been pretty much the same as everywhere else - some nice, some not. I've never had anyone have a go at me because I'm English & I've got nothing against the Scottish people or Scotland (I think it's a very beautiful country - probably more so than England).

However, I think of myself as English first (even though both my parents are Welsh - I was born & brought up in London) and British second. Therefore when people make comments about my country it pisses me off. Especially as I wasn't exactly in the best of moods at the time of writing that post so Tony D's comment hit a nerve. I get annoyed when people from Britain don't support England out of national spite - we're all British for Christ's sake. If Scotland or Wales were in Euro 2004 I'd support them. But it always seems that when England are playing, the other countries in Britain turn on us. That is why I said what I did. I'm not going to apologise for it, although I will accept that it was perhaps a trifle harsh and I over-generalised.
