My name is Tom and I'm from Casey,Illinois. I'm a veteran of the US Navy and am interested in learning about life in the British Navy, as well as the other branches, and maybe gain a penpal in the process.

Thanks for the nice welcome. Well, I served in the Navy from '78-'85, got out and worked in the aviation field, then served in the Army from '88-'91. So I'm 44, but still in my prime. I probably spend too much time at the computer, but I've only had it a short while, and I'm getting the hang of it. I got a good deal on my internet service, but MAN it's slow.

Tom,
you broadband or dial-up?
I'm thinking about satellite DSL as I live in the boonies and have no cable.

My connection is dial-up. My modem is around 52K. I could buy a faster modem, and that might help. From the time I turn my computer on until I can get to my E-mail, almost 5 minutes have gone by. I once went to a web site where you can get live tv broadcasts from all over the world. That sounded cool, but the best I could get were still images. Now my sister has cable internet and it's lightning fast. But $40 per month is more than I want to spend on internet, considering basic cable is $30 per month anyway. Satellite DSL is available in this area, but I haven't checked into it.
