Need advice

Post by Bootie »

Hey all.

I’ve come across a little problem. I’ve wanted to join the paras for a long time now but:

Two months ago I caught some serious food poisoning which turned into Viral Gasteritouse (or something pronounced like that anyway.) Basically it meant I had trouble keeping my food down for more then 15 minutes before chucking most of it back up. I had it for around two weeks and lost almost two and a half stone in weight, and my fitness went down the drain. After the illness past I started my training again but being the muppet I am I started off two hard, causing a couple of annoying muscle strains and something that sometimes makes my left shin hurt like hell after a run.

Anyway present day and I’ve got most of my weight back, but I can only do 40 press-ups and 10 pull-ups, and I’m struggling to keep my mile and a half time under 10:30.

Under normal circumstances I would just keep training until I got my fitness level up to para standards but I’m running out of time. I applied for the army back in November 2002, and due to previous medical history problems and pure bad luck, I still havnt even passed RSC. My dads tired of me having a crappy part time job for the last two years and so am I.

Basically, I’m going to have to go for a normal infantry regiment, and hopefully join the paras at a later date. One of the main reasons why I wanted to join the paras is because they are more likely to get sent to where the fighting is before a regular infantry regiment.

So is there an infantry regiment that is more likely to get sent some where first?

Also, my Careers office guy is trying to persuade me to go to my local regiment, the Royal Anglians, but I’m hearing better things about the Light Infantry and the RGJ, so id prefer to join one of them. Anyone got any tips on how I can tell the careers guy that I don’t want to join the Royal Anglians, considering that he’s one.

Cheers for any replies. :)

If your ultimate goal is the paras then why dont you allow yourself an extra month to try for it. In reality what is a month compared to a life time of being proud that you were a para.....

GO to RSC with Paras as your first choice, and then which ever infantry regiment of your choice as your second. If you pass RSC to para standard then your laughing. If you dont pass to Para standard, either try again or join your second choice. Either way you cant say you havent tried.

Cheers for the post Mike.

Thats exactly what im doing mate, paras first choice, infantry second, and I think RAC third. Trouble is I think its my last time to go to RSC, I had a heart murmur my first and a crap run time my second, so this is the final one  . You only get to go three times dont you?

Anyway my referal from my last RSC is up on May 25th, so I should be going back around then. Im going to train like hell for the next month or so for the paras, and il do everything I can to get in. Just want a bit of help on deciding which regiment to join if I dont do aswell as I hope to.

I'd agree, give yourself the extra time to get fit for the Paras. However don't fool yourself into thinking that you won't get deployed anywhere if you join a 'regular' Infantry Regiment. I went to see the Laying up of 1KORBR's Colours today and the number of campaign ribbons on most of the serving soldiers' breasts was something to behold. The British Army is stretched VERY thin right now and almost everyone will see an operational tour within a very short time of signing up.

Cheers for the post Adam mate, I realise that whatever regiment I do join im going to see active service, which is great. Trouble is Ive got this feeling that my local regiment aint the one for me, and that ill be better off in the Light Infantry or RGJ. I dont really have a good excuse for going for the RGJ or the Light Infantry as my second choice rather then the Royal Anglians apart from that ive heard good things about them on this site, and ive read their web site and found they have alot of good history, and their pretty proud of themselves. (Then again almost every infantry regiment is like that :-? )

Do you think thats a good enough reason for not going for the Royal Anglians or is my careers sergent going to give me a hard time for it. :(

Cheers :)

Hi Bootie

I'm in the processes of joining the army, an more than likely I will be joining RGJ. I have a friend in 1RGJ He has only been in for 2 years and has already been Iraq, an at the moment is in N. Ireland for 6 months. So he's seen his fare share of active service so far, an thats one of my reason's for possible joining them. :D

But if you really wish to join the Paras then go for it mate. :fadein:

I`d love to join the RM, but I am nowhere near fit at the minute. Training well tho, and hopefully in 6+months I feel I will be up to applying for them. HOPEFULLY!

I like to set my aims low, then move up a level once I know I can acheive the lower one ;)
