Any one in the know on hip injuries from running??

Post by FozzyNumber4 »

Has anyone had an injury that causes pain on the inside of their pelvis/hip? I think its from the running I've been doing and my body isn't really used to it????

It certainly feels like a muscular pain. I can't seem to find any info on the web about it but when I run again it seems to loosen up during the run and then is sore again....

Cheers.

Does the pain last long?

Could be a strain or could just be overly tight. Either way ice it when it hurts, rest, avoid any painful activity and stretch as much as poss (up to 3 times a day, holding for 30 secs- 1 min x 3) and gradually return to activity level. Stop if in pain. Use NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibruprofen as well.

Could be from the impact from running, seeing as you're not used to it. I used to get similar pains in my hips when I ran for long periods with a bergen.

What pain is it? If it feels like a sort of popping as a ligament/tendon slides over your hip, i had it and its called your Iliotibial Band (ITB). To stretch your ITB stand up, cross your feet over and then slowly lean down on one side sliding your hand down your leg - you'll know which way to lean just try it... Hope this helps, it helped me. I got it from running on the road too much and the road cambre being dodgy... Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'll be doing the stretching and ice for sure, but may stick to a little light jogging as its only niggle rather than a show stopper. It doesn't have the popping feeling that BassBoyLuke described, more of a persistent ache. If it gets any worse I'll back off but I'm on holiday next week and doing lots of swimming rather than running (too hot to run in Egypt this early in my training..I'm no commando yet! :o ) so hopefully that will help.

Thanks again guys.

It could be growth pains depending on your age. I had what you described when I was a bit younger and icing it will relieve the pain. My coach also told me to stick to the athletics track and grass land, staying well clear of road running, I did this and now I've grown abit more I don't get any more pains.

I hope I'm not growing any more at 25! But I take your point on road running versus grass/track running. I'm a bit limited on options though so a gym and running on the machine might be the way to start off. At least theres some suspension there and I can go on to road running once I've built up a little resistance.

Thanks for the tip.

Fozzy, i've been having the same as you and its been puzzling me too. I can't remeber when i started getting mine but it wasn't from running. In fact i reckon a big long beaster run will sort it out ...

I'll see

I have the same thing, I just run through it when it's 'good' pain.

If it's 'bad' pain then run anyway :p
It's only pain.

bassboyluke could be right it may be your ITB flaring up , on the other hand if it feels like a band of discomfort circling around the crotch and hip it may by piriformis

I get the same thing everytime I run on hard ground, try and vary the surface you run on if you can. You can also try a good pair of shock absorbing insoles or heel raises that you put inside your shoes.

This usually works for me. :D
