On this day in 1982, the Argies with ill intent, were boarding ships in Southern Argentine ready for the short trip to the Falklands.

On this day in 2000 I was promoted to Sgt. I also got a crap squad. Got to love the Army.
Let them call me a rebel and I welcome it, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of demons were I to make a whore of my soul. (Thomas Paine)

On this day, 1 Apr 1918-

The Royal Air Force is formed by amalgamating the RFC and RNAS. Bristol F.2B Fighters of No. 22 Squadron carry out the first official missions of the RAF. A female branch of the new Service, the Women's Royal Air Force is also formed. Those squadrons belonging to the RNAS were allocated new numbers in the 200 range - No 1 Squadron RNAS became 201 Squadron RAF, 2 Squadron RNAS became 202 Squadron RAF, etc.

Sully, isn`t that where the Rope room is, that FCUKing long room where they had all the ropes for the rigging ships laid out prior to being shipped onboard?

Are you sure it wasn't DQ's me old mucker :o

That's the one - the room is still there, the saddo that I am, I have a season ticket for the dockyard. Well worth a trip but allow plenty of time - there's stacks to see and you feel quite proud at the end of it.

I went there with an old oppo (we took the boy) and listened to a guided tour where the guide made a few comments about 'mental' bootnecks and an ex-matelot tourist was happy to oblige with tales about how mad and fearless Royal was  We just kept shtum - as mere mortals we didn't want to ruin the image and disappoint everyone

On this day in 1982.

The best ever April fools joke was promulgated.

CDOLOGS DRO's (daily routine orders). Last sentence on DRO's read as follows:

Have a good leave!

An exert from my grandads (6th Airborne) diary dated April 1st 1944.

Finished duties early forenoon. Willy Borlow turned-up and I decided to have a real night out to drown my sorrows (missing Dorothy). Visited all the pubs in town. Somehow managed to get Willy onto the last bus for home, left him sleeping on the rear seat. Managed to crawl back to camp well after lights out, soaked to the skin. Lucky to be a NCO or I would have spent the remainder of the night in the guard room - Never again.

I wonder if he stuck to that?? Would I be right in thinking that he would have been one of the very first Para's?? I have a plaque that he gave me when I was born which consists of a regimental badge and the words "utrinique Paratus" i have never been a soldier but it makes me swell with pride when I think of him.

Cheers Si

April 2, 1982
The Argentine Navy with thousands of troops lands on the Falklands. A small detachment of Royal Marines on the islands put up a brave but futile resistance before Governor Rex Hunt ordered them to lay down their arms. The marine forces are flown to Montevideo along with the British governor.

Corned beef sandwich governor?

It gives me a certain perverse satisfaction, knowing that Mrs Hopster will be watching " An Ungentlemanly Act" tonight. 8)
